About the role

PREP currently has a part-time (28 hrs/week) or full-time (35 hrs/week) opening for a Teacher to join our multi-disciplinary team and make a real difference in the lives of children with Down syndrome. This unique opportunity will provide a range of experiences to develop your skills as an educator and allow you to share your expertise as you work alongside families, staff, and teachers.

PREP is well known for its success in supporting families and children with Down syndrome, and we take pride in our role as an advocate for inclusion for over 36 years. This position would support both our Reading Program and STARS program. PREP's Reading Program provides individualized literacy programming for each student in their caseload, and work directly with students and parents/guardians to achieve literacy goals. Our STARS program (Social, Thinking, Advocacy, and Regulation) is a bi-weekly group program that works on critical skills that are essential for community inclusion and participation. This position would provide reading instruction on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and teach our grades 3-6 STARS program on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Job Summary

As a Reading Instructor, you will use your knowledge and experience to create enriched literacy sessions that are student-focused, parent supported, and educate parents in order to provide a continuity of learning at home. The Reading Instructor will have access to a team of professionals, including Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Family Support Liaisons to ensure all students and family needs are being met.

As Program Instructor, you will play a fundamental role in nurturing the social, emotional, and independence of children. Your responsibilities will include creating a supportive and engaging classroom environment, designing curriculum to help students develop their independence, executive functioning, social, communication, and self advocacy skills. Instructors will work collaboratively with a team including a Children Development Facilitator, Speech Language Pathologist, and Occupational Therapist.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create individualized, developmentally appropriate and engaging literacy sessions that develop skills for reading and comprehension
  • Adapt literacy curriculum for students with complex learning needs
  • Provide parents with methodology on approach to learning and outcomes
  • When appropriate, integrate therapeutic goals into literacy goals and outcomes
  • Work closely with other PREP staff to support families both in and outside of the classroom
  • Create engaging group lessons that support student learning goals
  • Create yearly overviews, curriculum units, and daily lesson plans
  • Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and organized classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Implement effective behavior management strategies to ensure a positive classroom atmosphere
  • Provide interactive and hands-on instruction that caters to various learning styles and abilities
  • Assess student progress through observations, assessments, and informal evaluations

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field (Master's degree is a plus)
Teaching certification or licensure
3 - 5 years experience working with children

Pay: $27.00-$35.00 per hour
