About the opportunity
The Faculties of Health and Computer Science at Dalhousie University invite applications for the Shannex Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Healthy Aging. The Shannex Research Chair will be a probationary tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (commensurate with experience) jointly appointed to the Faculties of Health and Computer Science, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher with the potential to lead an internationally recognized research program that develops and deploys artificial intelligence to health and healthcare related applications focused on healthy aging. The successful applicant’s cross-disciplinary research program will align with the priority areas of ‘Body function and mobility across the health continuum’ in the Faculty of Health and ‘AI and Machine Learning’ in the Faculty of Computer Science. The Shannex Research Chair responds to two of Dalhousie’s six Strategic Research Clusters, ‘Healthy People, Communities, & Populations’ and ‘AI & Digital Innovation’.
The Shannex Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Health was established through the generosity of Shannex Incorporated (shannex.com). Shannex’s operations in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia provide a full continuum of services including home care, retirement living, assisted living, memory care and long-term care. By providing the best care and service excellence to people as they age, Shannex leads the way to better living for individuals and our communities.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a health or a related discipline (e.g., medicine, biomedical engineering or computer sciences with an emphasis in health), and will be an emerging leader with a national and growing international reputation in pioneering digital interventions that bridge the gap between research and practical applications of artificial intelligence to healthcare. This may include, but is not limited to, research focused on frailty or frailty markers, healthy aging, chronic and complex care, and clinical aspects of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, exercise, mobility, as well as other aspects of health. The successful candidate will have a proven capacity to obtain external research funding, recruit and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and disseminate knowledge.
The successful candidate will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community, post-secondary institutions, and key partners in the health sector (e.g., health authorities and providers of long-term care services in the province). As the Shannex Research Chair, the successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to utilize their assets to take a data-driven approach to care delivery, enhance the experience of residents in long-term care, and drive sustained improvements in long-term care contexts and for seniors across the continuum. With ties to both the Faculties of Health and Computer Science, the successful candidate will provide research leadership and promote interdisciplinary scholarship to create new opportunities and drive strategic directions at the intersection of health and computer science.
