Lumber and Commodities Purchaser
About the role
This is a 12-18 month contract for a maternity leave coverage.
JOB SUMMARY
The Lumber and Building Materials Buyer reports directly to the Supply Chain Manager and is responsible for procuring commodity lumber and specific building materials categories for all locations. The role provides market intel for the sales team and the Senior Management team, and ensures products are procured and priced competitively while maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the inventory.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Procurement
- Procure commodity lumber, plywood, OSB and select categories of building materials for all locations
- Provide market intelligence on the direction of the market and strategic buying opportunities to the Sales and Senior Teams to grow current margin levels
- Works with sales team to build and develop current, accurate quotes/bids
- Expedite orders when required and set up and add items to computer system
- Communicate new product opportunities for contractor/retail
Supplier Management

Communicate and interact with vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately

Communicate with suppliers to resolve problems regarding delivery, quality, price, or conditions of sale.

Build, maintain, and enhance relationships with strategic, long-term vendor partners

Mitigate issues between suppliers and the company

Develop new supply sources by educating vendors by the size, scope and buying power of FVBS
Inventory Coordination and Control
- Maintain competitive pricing for all locations of both contractor and consumer divisions and achieve overall category margin targets
- Work with Supply Chain Manager to develop and implement policies / procedures related to purchasing and inventory control to maximize efficiency and optimize workflow.
- Work with the Accounts Payable department to rectify any variance from PO’s and invoices
- Collaborate with warehouse/yard and inventory teams to track and maintain accuracy in stock quantities.
- Responsible for a strong in-stock position and maximize turn potential in all product lines
- Coordinate with satellites stores for accurate stock transfers and purchasers
- Maintain inventory levels to stay within purchasing budgets
Compliance
- Ensure all purchase orders, invoices, and supplier agreements are accurately documented.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and safety and ethics guidelines
- Performs other duties as requested
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5-10 years of Purchasing/Inventory Control/or Supply Chain experience, extensive lumber market and commodity buying preferred
- Strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft office suite and general ERP systems
- Understanding of inventory control and warehousing principles
- Excellent communication and negotiating skills
- Understanding contracts and terms of purchase.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
