About the role

Job Summary:

The Custodian is responsible for the cleaning, security, and maintenance of the school and office building. The ideal candidate should have experience in cleaning or maintenance and be physically able to meet the requirements of the job.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Clean classrooms, offices, and recreational facilities
  • Mop tile and concrete floor areas; clean all mirrors
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures as required; vacuum all carpeted areas
  • Wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers, and fixtures
  • Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning materials; replenish toilet tissue and soap as needed
  • Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans; place garbage in outside storage bins
  • Clean entrances and exits including glass, doors, and hardware
  • Keep the outside area near exits and entrances clear of snow, cans, paper, etc.
  • Clean, wash, and disinfect drinking fountains
  • Wash all fingerprints and marks from walls, doors, hardware, and glass
  • Perform and/or report minor maintenance repairs
  • Clean cafeteria after lunch and clean kitchen sinks and counters
  • Report damages and acts of vandalism
  • Wash and buff floors using a floor polisher
  • Spot clean walls and toilet partitions; wash entrance and exit floors
  • Handle any queries or data/information requests from head office in a timely manner
  • Ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored safely and orderly
  • Report any health and safety concerns to the Office Manager; note the need for equipment repairs
  • Monitor that main water shutoff, alarm system, heating system, and electrical/control panels are operating safely to maintain ongoing operation and prevent emergency damage
  • Immediately clean up any student accidents (e.g., spills, drops, bathroom incidents)
  • Ensure compliance with WHMIS regulations for labeling, handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous supplies
  • Water and mow lawns, playing fields, and green areas; remove snow from sidewalks and driveways and apply salt
  • Lock, secure, and activate building security systems after working hours

Qualifications:

Minimum:
Good physical condition. For the safety of students, successful candidates must submit a satisfactory criminal record check and a negative TB test before starting employment. Related experience and completion of a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) course is required.

Knowledge

  • Standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and First Aid
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions for the use and application of cleaning chemicals/products
  • Basic record-keeping procedures
  • How to safely transfer and label secondary containers for cleaning products to avoid misuse

Working Conditions

Physical Demands
This is a physically demanding role. The incumbent will be standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, and operating medium-weight cleaning equipment for extended periods. Tasks include sweeping, mopping, moving furniture, and bending/stretching frequently. Operation of floor polishers and waxers is physically strenuous. Allergies aggravated by cleaning products are a disqualification.

Environmental Conditions
The custodian works with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that, if improperly used, may be harmful. Exposure to unpleasant odors and bodily fluids is frequent. Conditions in washrooms may be particularly unpleasant.

Sensory Demands
Exposure to strong odors and fumes from cleaning products. Mishandling can cause injury, sickness, or skin irritation.

Mental Demands
Stress may result from working in unpleasant situations or environments such as messy washrooms or emergency cleanups.
