About the role

We are currently seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Assistant Superintendent with wood frame experience to join our construction team on upcoming multi-family residential projects in Vancouver. This position is ideal for candidates who are hands-on, detail-oriented, and eager to grow into a future leadership role. Reporting to the Superintendent and working closely with the site team, this role involves overseeing day-to-day site operations with a focus on framing, rough-ins, envelope, and safety. The successful candidate will contribute to quality control, scheduling, trade coordination, and site logistics while maintaining Marcon’s standards for craftsmanship and safety.

About the Role

General

  • Follow Marcon policies and procedures and lead by example;
  • Support the Superintendent to ensure progress, site hygiene and quality are all maintained;
  • Review the Superintendent's schedule and understand priorities;
  • Handle day-to-day schedule (micro-manage) all framing, rough-ins and envelope aspects of the project as laid out by the Superintendent;
  • Quality control of all aspects of framing, envelope, rough-in and exterior finishes;
  • Participate in all required morning and weekly trade progress meetings;
  • Ability to understand and review all drawings to ensure project accuracy including all required shop drawings and architectural, mechanical, electrical, interior design and structural drawings;
  • Monitor crane and forklift usage with regard to deliveries and their production rates;
  • Understand site temporary power and distribution needs;
  • When the workload and size of the project dictate, be a hands-on contributor, able to help with all skilled and labour tasks.

Safety

  • Maintain a high safety culture on the site and support CSO’s efforts;
  • Attend Safety toolbox talks and demonstrate commitment to safety in those meetings;
  • Understand all WCB regulations with regard to multi-family wood frame construction;
  • Understand crane and forklift safety;
  • Understand fire safety plans.

Excavation & Parkade structure

If placed on the project site at the below-grade stage, this role will be expected to:

  • Understand and able to manage the installation of excavation layout inclusive of batter boards for excavation;
  • Understand basic deep excavation shoring principles including shotcrete panel sequence, face-saving measures, and anchor bolts types including cased, nailed wall and IBO. Including testing operations and tolerances;
  • Understand and oversee water management during detail excavation including temp sump locations, hose routes and pump locations;
  • Schedule gravel, concrete and window deliveries;
  • Quantify materials needed and all aspects of SOG and backfill Prep;
  • Maintain accurate log for concrete and gravel and quantify import and export materials;
  • Assist in SOG Prep, ensuring all final and subgrades are marked on the walls and columns and they are accurate and work as per the design;
  • Understand criteria for sub-grade and ensure the ground is prepared for inspection;
  • Ensure correct compaction is achieved. Review Geo tech report for specifications on compaction and material used for import;
  • Work with the mechanical and electrical contractor to ensure underground piping is done in an orderly fashion and inspected before covering;
  • Ability to coordinate foundation elevations and underground services;
  • Understand basic offsite civil construction sequences and materials.

The Detail

  • Understand basic survey principles, with the ability to set up and operate laser levels and record and report data;
  • Manage all wood and steel stud Rough-Ins;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of wood and steel stud framing, inclusive of; walls, joisting, drops, stairs, shafts, roofs and all related back framing;
  • Understand and manage all required layers of wood and drywall in the framing process to achieve required ratings in assemblies;
  • Understand all aspects of wood frame shrinkage and techniques to mitigate;
  • Understand and manage basic mechanical and electrical Rough-In elements and sequencing in townhouse and four/six-story multi-family wood frame construction;
  • Understand all required pre-firestop sequences for drops and bulkheads;
  • Understand all masonry construction and relationships to wood framing;
  • Understand basic elevator installation sequences;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of fire suppression in wood structures including monitoring.
  • Understand basic aspects of building science;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of siding installation including, but not limited to, Masonry, Stone, cementitious fibreboard, window wall and storefront glazing and metal panel;
  • Understand all aspects of finishing sequence and provide support when needed;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of lightweight concrete toppings;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of cementitious floor levelling techniques;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of wood frame hold down, shear wall and other seismic systems.

Internal & External Inspections:

  • Schedule all inspections, inclusive of structural Framing; Geo Tech; Envelope; firestop; materials testing;
  • Inspect and monitor framing quality for plum, level and square and ensure correct location as per drawings, inclusive of all required back framing and rough-ins;
  • Understand basic concrete reinforcing terms, sequences and install methods.

Envelope

  • Understand and manage all aspects of below-grade and above-grade envelope sequencing, including but not limited to flashings, hot rubber, building paper, S.A.M, deck coatings, SBS, Asphalt shingles, standing seam, cementitious, damp proofing and waterproofing;
  • Ensure envelope details on the drawing are being used and done correctly;
  • Monitor water egress from higher levels in the structure and manage as necessary;
  • Understand basic vinyl window installation sequencing;
  • Understand basic multi-family wood frame moisture control and drying techniques;
  • Understand and manage all aspects of temp hoarding.

Housekeeping & Admin

  • Maintain a clean and organized office area;
  • Prepare daily task sheets for all Marcon employees under this scope and monitor progress;
  • Maintain an up-to-date daily diary including photos and notes;
  • Ability to review, code and approve all Marcon employee timesheets in the absence of the Superintendent;
  • Ensure tracking for tools/cords/Marcon equipment;
  • Ensure accuracy of paperwork including proper completion of purchase orders;
  • Rent items as needed and keep track so they can be cancelled in a timely manner;
  • Use Fieldwire to communicate trade issues and quality i.e. framing, rough-in and envelope quality;
  • Read and understand all scopes of work related to contractors involved in the structure, including formwork, exterior envelope, roofing and window installation activities.

About You

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and a continuous learning attitude;
  • Red seal carpenter preferred with a minimum of five years of framing experience;
  • Some Microsoft skills; excel; word; outlook, MS Project as well as construction-specific software i.e. Fieldwire and blue beam;
  • Understand basic trigonometry and construction math;
  • Tickets: bobcat; forklift; L1 First Aid; Fall Pro; Safety Supervisor;
  • Ability to work long hours when necessary to maintain project schedule;
  • Ability to accurately estimate quantities for wood framing materials inclusive of hardware and hold-down systems.
