Your Opportunity

Under the limited supervision of the Campus Librarian, and in coordination with the Campus Library Coordinator, the Library Technician, Public Services is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the public area of the Campus Library; assisting library users with library processes; providing exceptional library service; maintaining the collection and local area files; maintaining campus media bookings; completing assigned project work.

Functions and Duties

  1. Charges, discharges and renews library materials including circulating laptops and other equipment

  2. Maintains and accesses library accounts and records

  3. Assists all library users, including students, employees and the general public by telephone, electronically or face-to-face; handles queries in a sensitive and timely manner and refers to the Campus Library Coordinator, Librarian or other resources as appropriate

  4. Helps library users to locate materials, search for information using the online catalogue, research databases, and web search engines, properly cite sources, use library equipment including microfilm/fiche readers, photocopiers and printers and with routine productivity software and institutional computer accounts

  5. Collects and records payments, fines and fees; provides change as required; assists the Campus Library Coordinator with the regular accounting and depositing of monies from the public service area

  6. Issues Okanagan College photo ID to students; processes payment for replacement cards; communicates errors to Facilities and Business Services

  7. In the absence of the Campus Library Coordinator is responsible for the overall operation of the library and for library opening and closing procedures; coordination and scheduling of circulation activities; interaction with other campus libraries; updating of library hours information; ordering and maintaining of supplies for public area operations; overseeing of computer, media and other Library equipment; collection of monies; accounting and depositing of monies from the public services area

  8. Processes requests for library material, including sending out periodical articles to library users as required

  9. Prepares intercampus deliveries and assigns materials to the most time-effective delivery

  10. Responsible for coordinating media booking requests; processes internal media requests; distributes materials and notifies instructors; liaises with library staff on other campuses as necessary

  11. Communicates library polices to library users

  12. Maintains the photocopier and microfiche/film reader-printer, laser printer, circulating laptops and other library equipment; troubleshoots technical issues and refers to IT Services, as required

  13. Assists in maintenance of collections including sensitizing and labeling materials; shelving and shelf reading of materials; preparing boxes and file folders; and assisting with collection inventory

  14. Responsible for recording statistics for reference and library space use

  15. Completes minor emergency repairs; refers other damaged materials to the Campus Librarian for assessment

  16. Updates the periodical collection including print and microform, company annual reports and reference publication filing; monitors missing periodical issues and obtaining replacement copies

  17. Communicates with Library Technical Services staff on problems related to the collections

  18. Maintains local area files; clips and labels local newspaper articles; matches clipping file material with existing subject headings and recommends new subject headings; uses the integrated library system(ILS) cataloguing module to enter new clipping files in the catalogue

  19. Promotes library programs and services through production of displays and the creation of guides, handouts and publicity information as assigned

  20. Ensures appropriate maintenance of Library public service area facilities, technology and equipment (i.e. laptops, photocopiers, computers) by reporting issues, submitting work requests, and coordinating with the appropriate department

  21. When the Campus Library Coordinator is not working, runs automated library system reports to generate library notices to users and responds to requests or questions about these notices; removes flags from the student registration system and issues clearances; maintains records for billings and fines

  22. Monitors student employees in the absence of the Campus Library Coordinator

  23. Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

Must possess a Library Technician diploma. A minimum of 2 years related post-secondary library experience required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of automated library systems
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs
  • Technical aptitude for learning new systems and software and propensity for life-long learning to ensure technical

currency

  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision

  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service, to handle user complaints and suggestions, and to resolve conflict

Salary range: $48,994-$55,947 annually. Salary will be prorated based on FTE.
