About the role
Under the general direction of the Supervisor of Engineering Projects – Communication Systems, the Technologist 2 assists the Technologist 3 by providing technical assistance in planning, designing, specifying and evaluating radio systems, two-way radio site infrastructure equipment, radio user gear, communication systems, video surveillance systems, audio systems, alarm systems, and related specialized electronic and computer equipment in support of emergency services and other City department operations. The position may be responsible for knowledge sharing between peers. Duties include organizing time, ordering equipment and materials and maintaining records/documentation for specific project deployments, with tasks at times supervised by a Technologist 3.
As the Technologist II, you will:
- Provide technical assistance to engineering staff in planning, designing, specifying, and evaluating communications systems, CCTV systems, audio systems, radio systems, and related equipment.
- Undertake research and field testing by collecting data, work with consultants, suppliers, and staff from other city departments, and prepare reports.
- Visit sites (offices, arenas, radio huts, etc.) to check on field conditions.
- Design and specify simple or standardized systems, and specify basic equipment.
- Prepare drawings, manuals, and other records as required to document system designs and projects.
- Manage projects, prepare cost estimates, labour requirements, and schedules, and monitor progress against time and cost estimates.
- Order equipment required for projects.
- Participate in contract administration by preparing or assisting in the preparation of specifications, tenders, awards, progress monitoring reports, final cost reports, and release of bonds.
- Inspect field installations to verify correct installation and proper operation.
- Investigate field problems in conjunction with Operations Division staff.
- Review and monitor the performance and suitability of existing equipment and installed systems.
- Prepare reports and other internal and external correspondence as required.
- Perform other related duties compatible with the classification, as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:

Diploma in Electronic Engineering Technology from a recognized Community College or other equivalent training and eligibility for membership in CTTAM at the technologist level.

A minimum of two years’ experience at the technologist level (ie. design and/or specification experience) relative to radio, or communications, or CCTV, or audio equipment and systems, or a minimum of five years’ experience at the technician level (i.e. maintenance) relative to any of the above.

Demonstrated competence in effectively communicating with engineers, users and suppliers.

Demonstrated competence in preparing effective reports and good quality specifications.

Ability to and willingness to participate in any and all related training, as required.

Proficiency in preparing electrical/electronic drawings using CAD.

Proficiency in electronic/communications terminology and concepts and a demonstrated understanding of the relevance and importance of system and/or equipment performance parameters.

Ability to apply engineering principles and practices.

Ability to interpret plans and specifications.

Ability to prepare well organized, comprehensive and understandable manuals.

- Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position – including lifting up to 50 lbs; ability to crawl into small spaces and ability to work outdoors and at heights as necessary.
