Merriam Music is currently looking for a Piano and Violin Teacher to join our team. You will be working at our Oakville facility located at 2359 Bristol Cir #100, Oakville, ON L6H 6P8.

This is a permanent, full-time position, based on 37.5 hours per week. The successful application will be required to work evenings and consistent Sundays, as well as day shifts. Further information respecting the position can be found below.

Position

If you love and play music to a high standard and are inspired to share your musical experiences with youth and adults alike, you’ll enjoy being part of our teaching team. As a Piano and Violin Teacher, your main job duty will be teaching technique and theory for playing the piano and/or violin in both private and group formats. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is passionate about music and sharing music, highly organized, able to adapt, energetic and trustworthy.

As noted above, your primary responsibility is to teach group and private music lessons. This involves:

  • Understanding Merriam Music product and lesson offerings and referencing provided long-term plans to create individual class/lesson plans – an orientation training program will be provided to help the successful applicant understand the full Merriam School of Music offering (lessons, programs, policies, and basic instruments) in order to maximize the experience of students and families.
  • Utilizing the resources through the Resource Library Plan to augment the level of student engagement during lessons.
  • Creatively delivering organized and thoughtfully built lessons that engage both the parents and students and ensure motivation to continue practicing throughout the week.
  • Reviewing all organizational newsletters and communications to remain informed about events and opportunities for students and families to participate in the full program offerings to encourage continued learning even outside lessons.
  • Engage with parents from time to time to identify any potential barriers to student progress and ensure they are feeling heard and supported in the process of resolution.
  • Attending monthly teacher meetings in order to understand roles and responsibilities within each new initiative, program or approach and to learn how to best communicate these to customers and students effectively.
  • Complete all parents/teacher interview write-ups, streaming notes, attendance etc. as required by your program.
  • Proactively follow up with customers if any student progress issues are identified through lessons in order to address them immediately. Change approach to lesson delivery to address these issues and support student success and retention.

In addition to your primary job duty of teaching music, secondary administrative duties to supplement your role as Piano and Violin Teacher will include the following:

  • Translate customer questions, issues and concerns into positive experiences and resolutions for customer. Inform the correct administrative or management support people of the issues and how you’ve addressed them.
  • Create a high standard customer experience in every interaction.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development for customer engagement techniques.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to share service and teaching techniques that are successful, and to address customer and industry trends.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Musical training from a university required.
  • High performance talent and ability to translate complex musical concepts to easy and accessible instruction for students required – audition to be held.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience teaching music.
  • Administrative experience preferred.
  • Highly organized yet able to adapt to changing needs.
  • Able to establish relationships with new people quickly.
  • Excellent communicator (beyond written and verbal to include listening and questioning).
  • Diffuse conflict situations with tact and empathy.
  • Take a personal interest in the success of the student and the experience of the family.

Compensation

We offer a generous compensation package, which includes:

  • Salary: $40-50k per annum based on 37.5 hours of work per week
  • Vacation: 10 paid days per year
