Reporting to the Head of Security, Protective Services, the Inspector oversees the daily operations of NAIT Protective Services (NPS) with a goal of providing staff, students, visitors and contractors with a safe and secure environment in which to work, learn and interact. It will also work to protect NAIT property across the institute. Operating in a 24/7 environment, the role will follow a community policing model and provide supervisory oversight to a team including Sergeants, Peace Officers, Security Agents, Security Communications Officers and contract staff who will patrol and monitor all campuses. The Inspector will design, develop and implement intelligence-based patrol strategies and assist in the development, administration and enforcement of legislation, policies and guidelines related to safety, security and emergency management activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead training program developer, responsible to maintain training records, administering and delivering field training, leadership training and staff development training.

  • Research, develop and deliver NPS guiding documents including standard operation procedures, directives, emergency response plans, hazard assessments etc.

  • Manage application and renewal of Peace Officer and Security Agent appointments and associated legislative requirements.

  • Supervise and direct Sergeants including shift scheduling, payroll approval, vacation planning, performance evaluations, discipline, court appearances, mandatory training, etc.

  • Review staff development plans, conduct needs assessments for training, develop training schedules and deliver training courses as required. Prepare the annual NPS training plan.

  • Manage administration of contracts for outsourced alarm and security guard companies

  • Manage NPS vehicle fleet and equipment inventory.

  • Participate in recruitment and selection of NPS staff.

  • Assist Head of Security in preparation of Protective Services budget, monitor expenditures and approve contract security service invoices.

  • Review of NPS reports to ensure quality control

  • Special event resourcing coordinator

  • Investigative and legislative compliance oversight for NPS

  • Assist Head of Security with development and maintenance of strategic plan for enterprise security risk management program

  • Identify and manage security risks that emerge resulting from program analysis, surveys and audits

  • Report on and conduct analysis and physical security assessments to inform the strategic mission of NPS

  • Develop and foster internal partnerships that identify and mitigate vulnerabilities

  • Implement strategies to improve safety and security prevention, response and detection strategies

  • Generate business cases, wherever appropriate

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Advanced computer skills including common workplace Security related software programs such as building management, access control, CCTV, incident management

  • Ability to work successfully in stressful environments

  • Ability to manage, develop and deliver training programs

  • Ability to multitask and to manage concurrent programs

  • Conduct, analyze and report on physical security risks

  • Trained in threat assessment, use of force continuums, crucial conversations, conflict resolution, and after-action reviews

  • Enhanced knowledge of threat assessment techniques / processes

  • Knowledge of data analysis techniques to generate reports related to security and crime trends

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in Security Services

  • Post secondary education in Security or related field

  • Certifications in Security-related fields such as CPP, APP, CPTED are considered an asset

  • Demonstrated experience related to Incident Command Systems and Emergency Management

Remuneration: $93,024.10 - $123,245.46 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
