L’Arche Homefires is seeking an energetic, compassionate individual to be a leader in one of our homes. The House Leader is responsible for the overall integration of the L’Arche Identity and Mission and Servant Leadership Model in the day-to-day life of the home while planning and overseeing high-quality support for each person with a developmental disability, and the supervision, support, training, operations and formation of all assistants and support workers in the home. The House Leader is an effective member of the House leaders’ team in the community. This fixed-term role offers L’Arche Homefires benefits package, including paid time off.
We currently have five L’Arche houses in and around Wolfville where people with and without disabilities live together. Emmaus House is home to four core members, who share life with a team of live-in and live-out assistants. This role has an already set schedule of:
Sunday: 12pm – 10pm
Monday: 7am – 3pm
Tuesday: 9am – 7pm
Wednesday: 7am – 12:30pm
Thursday: 3:30pm – 10pm
Friday: OFF
Saturday: OFF
This is a fixed-term role with a minimum of 12 months.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates and fosters a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere based on the characteristics of house members
- Plans and facilitates inclusive celebrations and traditions in the home that are representative of the house members
- Supports the life journey of each core member through dynamic individual plans, regular medical appointments, meaningful daily activities, and active participation in all applicable aspects of daily life in the home
- Oversees personal care and routines of core members are done with best practices and to a high standard by the assistants who work in the home
- Collaborating with team members to ensure that the physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, recreational, health, and safety needs of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities are met while maximizing their choices and participation in the decisions affecting their lives.
- Keeps up-to-date and accurate records in all areas: financial, medical, individual planning, etc.
- Ensures maintenance and upkeep of physical home, vehicle(s), and all house equipment and supplies
- Maintains a regular and consistent schedule of individual (supervisory) roles and goals meetings, team meetings, house meetings, and annual reviews
- Provides orientation and training to all Assistants responsible for the home
- Ensures Assistants have the skills and direction needed to perform their tasks and are comfortable in addressing tensions and following through as required.
- Liaisons with family members or guardians, professionals, and specialists
- Collaborate with the Leadership team in the community as well as with assistants in the home
- Scheduling support needs within the home as required, approving vacation and other PTO time.
- Ensure operational functions are completed in a timely and accurate manner. These include but are not limited to responding to emails, incident reports, bi-weekly payroll preparations, managing and entering schedules on software, ADP, and maintaining digital records and team communication.
- Ensure completion and maintenance of all eight (8) core competencies as required by the Department of Community Services, including support the house team to do the same.
- Maintain digital record keeping via the Core Member Database, Share Vision, Sharepoint, and utilize L’Arche Homefires Microsoft email as required for communication purposes.
Qualifications:
- Previous L’Arche experience is desirable but not essential.
- Post-secondary education in Human Services or relatable experience.
- Prior supervisory experience is valued, and we will consider other transferable supervisory experience or times you have stepped into leading others or tasks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Clear police check including vulnerable sector screening.
- Already developed an administrative and computer software skillset that will lead to supporting all administrative tasks that are required of a leader in the community.
- Shows initiative and pays excellent attention to detail, time management, and deadlines
- Is highly organized, able to set priorities, and follow through on commitments in a timely fashion.
- Ability to admit mistakes and learn; asks for and accepts help when needed.
- Previous experience supervising a team is considered an asset.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable, and to manage competing work priorities.
- Can remain calm and focused during times of uncertainty and crisis while providing clear directions.
- Works collaboratively, models and promotes conflict resolution, and is appreciative of others’ efforts.
- Comfortable working as part of a team, while being self-driven and motivated.
- Ability to problem solve, assist in reaching solutions, and obtain necessary resources
- Excellent team-focused communication skills, including the ability to give direction, report information, and model effective communication techniques/strategies with Core Members
- Canadian driver’s license and experience of over five (5) years considered an asset

We are the L'Arche Community in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. We have five homes, a day program called Cornerstone, a workshop, Applewicks, where many members are employed making candles and doing weaving. The retired members are involved in the Discoveries program.
