This position it temporary and will end by August 31, 2026. There is a possibility of extension of the end date.
Position Summary:
NOVA is a 24/7 transitional housing program dedicated to supporting youth between the ages of 16 and 24. As a low-barrier program, NOVA provides safe, stable housing while offering individualized support to help youth overcome barriers and work toward successfully transitioning into independent living.
Overnight Youth Workers play a key role in providing consistent, day-to-day support for residents. By modeling positive behavior and utilizing strong communication skills, they help youth develop essential life skills for greater independence. Youth Workers are also responsible for managing and responding to incidents, which may include de-escalation, administering first aid, and offering emotional support through active listening.
Responsibilities:
- Ongoing monitoring of administrative files to ensure they are kept complete and up-to date
- Maintain accurate and timely data collection, data entry and completion of any program assessments and surveys as directed
- Completion of accurate written daily documentation (log book entries, contact notes, incident reports, medication book entries)
- Completion of referral and intake documentation
- Deliver services in a client centered, strength-based approach consistent with unit philosophy
- Adapt services to meet the needs of diverse populations as per unit policy
- Build collaborative relationships with youth
- Role model life skills, social skills, communication skills and conflict resolution
- Support youth to achieve goals as defined on their individual service plans
- Encourage youth to engage in healthy lifestyle alternatives
- Transparently address current challenges with the youth
- Role model and assist the youth with self advocacy
- Deliver services in accordance with unit and agency policies and procedures
- Ensure youth are aware of and understand House rules and respond accordingly
- Maintain a safe, secure environment
- Communicate pertinent information to supervisor and other staff as necessary
- Liaise with guardians, program partners and other professionals
- Maintain positive relationships with community members (neighbors, visitors etc.) and report significant challenges/incidents to supervisor immediately
- Contribute to a positive culture by assisting and supporting colleagues as needed and encourage and teach others about the unit’s operations
- Practice agency mission, vision, values and guiding principles
- Maintain positive, professional working relationships with colleagues
- Participate in unit meetings
- Participate in agency meetings and on agency committees as appropriate
- Participate in core agency and additional training opportunities as directed and approved
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Skills:
- Diploma in a related human services field
- 1-year experience working with youth, in a residential setting is preferred
- Knowledge of harm reduction, addictions and strength-based philosophy
- Strong communication and relationship building skills
- Able to work within a team and effectively deal with crisis situations
- Able to work consistent awake overnights
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check
- General computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) including experience entering information into a database is preferred
Conditions of Employment:
- The successful candidate will be working 11pm-7am Sunday through Thursday. This overnight position is an awake shift.
- The position requires frequent standing, walking up and down stairs, and occasional lifting.
- The start date will be August 11, 2025, with an end date of August 31, 2026. There is a possibility of the end date extending beyond August 31, 2026.
- Location of work: Northwest Edmonton
- The successful candidate will need a clear Child intervention check, Criminal record check, and a valid First Aid Certificate upon employment start date.
