Position Overview Working closely with other staff members of the Health Information Services Department, liaising frequently with staff from various departments within and outside the facility, the incumbent will:
- Code day surgery health records utilizing ICD-10-CA and CCI and abstracting those records in accordance with CIHI standards.
- Extract data from the health record and appropriately enters that data into the on-line abstracting system in accordance with current coding and abstracting standards.
- Adjust abstracts based on updated chart documentation, edit failure reports and quality data reviews.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of encoded and abstracted information in order to meet strict schedules for data submission.
Experience
- Experience within the past three (3) years using ICD-10-CA and CCI (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Canada and Canadian Classification of Interventions) to code in accordance with CIHI Canadian Coding Standards.
- Experience within the past three (3) years completing abstracts in accordance with the CIHI Discharge Abstract Database Manual rules and guidelines.
- Preference given to those with knowledge and experience using the Manitoba Abstract Data Elements (MADE).
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Complete high school education, Manitoba standards requires.
- Successful completion of a CHIMA-recognized Health Information Management program required.
- Success challenge of the CHIMA National Certification examination, with a valid CHIMA certificate, current active CHIMA membership preferred.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Certification with the Canadian College of Health Information Management.
- Current active membership in the Canadian Health Information Management Association is preferred.
Qualifications And Skills
- Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to launch programs, navigate within and between windows, open hyperlinks, save documents, edit records and accurately perform data entry.
- Ability to assign diagnosis typing in accordance with the CIHI Coding Standards.
- Ability to analyze information in patient records in order to select appropriate codes, abstract data elements and assign patient services.
- Ability to use Folio Views to assign diagnosis and intervention codes.
- The ability to use the internet, locate web sites and search within sites for specific information required.
- Ability to manage time effectively and to prioritize demands in order to meet deadlines.
- Ability to recognize when key data, required to select appropriate codes and abstract elements, is missing from the patient record.
- Detail-oriented with an appreciation for data quality.
- Ability to use appropriate reference materials.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to ask appropriate questions to gain assistance.
- Ability to work independently.
- Must be able to deal with difficult and impolite people in a courteous, patient and tactful manner.
- Very frequent deadline pressures.
- Requires careful attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
Physical Requirements
- Extended periods using a computer, including viewing online information and using a mouse.
This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement. This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment. Please note that an employee is not permitted to hold two or more positions across the WRHA legal entity that combine to equal more than 1.0 EFT.
