About the role

OUR MISSION

To support families and serve children and adults living with intellectual disabilities by:

providing quality programs and services which support the development, the independence, and the empowerment of adults, children, and families.
working in partnership with adults, children, families, Society members, and members of the community, advocating for and developing a full range of community-based services to meet the unique needs of each person and family.
PRIMARY JOB GOAL Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Vocational Trainer provides a comfortable environment for individuals with intellectual disabilities to learn and practice those skills which are required in a work setting. You work as part of a team to ensure that individuals achieve personally meaningful goals for independence, community access, and vocational skill development.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support individuals to become as self-sufficient as possible in a vocational setting.
  • Work with the vocational team to identify areas of concern and improve service. Provide constructive input and recommendations to improve existing policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Support individuals to locate and access employment and work experience opportunities that meet their unique and evolving vocational needs.
  • Act as a positive role model for community members, co-workers, and those you support.
  • Advocate for the meaningful inclusion and active participation of people with intellectual disabilities within their community.
  • Work with the vocational team to maintain a safe and healthy environment for those you support. Monitor each work and recreational site to ensure that high standards of care are intact.
  • Coach and instruct individuals to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle and environment. Ensure that individuals have the opportunity to meaningfully interact with those who are important to them. Facilitate the involvement of family members and friends in the lives of the individuals you support.
  • Respect each individual’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist in all aspects of general administration, report writing, record keeping, and accountability of funds as requested.
  • Actively practice the Values, Beliefs, and Future Directions of the Intellectual disabilities Society in an ethical, caring, and professional manner
  • Perform other duties as requested.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • certificate in human services or a related field (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered)
  • minimum of one-year relevant experience in a similar environment

JOB SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • satisfactory English receptive and expressive communication
  • basic computer skills demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
  • knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the field
  • proven ability to make sound, independent decisions.
  • ability to function efficiently under pressure and manage multiple concurrent demands.

  • Criminal record check
  • Class 5 Restricted or Class 5 Unrestricted
  • Vehicle Required
  • valid first aid and crisis intervention (CPI) certification
  • medical approval
  • tuberculosis clearance
  • satisfactory reference checks
  • successful completion of Intellectual disabilities Society orientation
  • other requirements as detailed in Intellectual disabilities Society Policies

HOURS OF WORK

  • Tuesday to Friday: 9:00 am-3:00 pm (30 hours Weekly)
  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 am-3:00 pm (24 hours Weekly)

Work Location: In person

Ability to commute/relocate: North Vancouver, BC(reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work) (required)
