About the role
POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary role of the Maintenance Technician is to maintain all machines and building maintenance to ensure they are in good, safe working order for continuous production. The accurate completion of tasks and documentation supports our BRC Food Safety and Quality Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure all documentation is maintained through all outlets, including the MaintainX CMMS.
- Update and maintain MaintainX work orders, ensuring employees are effectively using MaintainX.
- Contribute to the preventative maintenance program designed to keep down time to a minimum and ensure there is an adequate supply of spares to replace broken or worn-out machine parts.
- Monitor the egg grading machine, visually inspecting components while running and troubleshooting any problems that are detected for continuous production.
- React promptly to problems with the machine and resolve breakdowns quickly and efficiently.
- Operate mobile equipment as needed.
- Assist others wherever needed to ensure continual running of the machine.
- Ensure employees are following established HACCP (Food Safety), biosecurity, and health and safety procedures.
- Ensure all food safety issues are communicated with the Plant Manager and Maintenance Manager/Supervisor.
- Ensure contractors comply with contractor responsibilities and procedures (on-site communication, required certifications, health and safety, and food safety requirements).
- Attend all scheduled training sessions and meetings when assigned by the Plant Manager or Maintenance Manager/Supervisor.
- Live by the company’s mission, vision, and values.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of staff.
- All other duties assigned by the Maintenance Manager/Supervisor or Plant Manager.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Grade 12 education and strong English (written and verbal) and mathematical skills required.
- Courses in electronics, computers and/or welding considered an asset.
- Several years maintenance experience servicing and maintaining processing and packaging line equipment in a production environment.
- Experience using computer applications and programs.
- Experience using mobile equipment considered an asset.
- Knowledge developing preventative maintenance programs, including training and operating procedures.
- A strong mechanical aptitude and skill at troubleshooting machinery required.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, ability to provide clear, concise general instructions for team effectiveness.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision required.
- Ability to follow set procedures and efficiently and effectively prioritize and organize work.
- Ability to communicate and work well with others, demonstrating politeness, respect, and courtesy in communication and daily interactions.
- Ability to tactfully and respectfully coach and encourage staff to gain understanding during machine troubleshooting.
- Good rapport building with other tradesmen and suppliers required.
- Analytical problem solving required (observing the problem, diagnosing the cause, and effective resolution).
- Ability to react quickly to problems as they arise, minimizing production down time.

The incumbent will be working in a proprietary environment. Policies and procedures are shared between Golden Valley Foods Ltd. and the L.H. Gray & Son group of companies. Discussion of these with non-Golden Valley Foods and L.H. Gray affiliated employees is strictly forbidden. Some specific policies can be shared with Fresh Start as Golden Valley Foods owners.

- Work in compliance with divisional and legislative health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods.
- Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
- Report defects in any equipment or protective device.
- Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned tasks.
- Participate in all required health, safety, and environmental training.
- Report any accidents/incidents to supervisor.
- Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.
- Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running, or rough and boisterous conduct.
- Report workplace hazards to a leader or the health and safety committee.

Sparks Egg Inc. is a leading supplier of farm fresh eggs to Calgary, Edmonton and surrounding areas. Our Grading Station handles approximately 50% of Alberta's egg production, processing eggs from over 70 Alberta egg producers.
Our facility for production, grading, packaging, marketing and storage is approximately 37,000 square feet. Processing and packaging is handled by state-of-the-art grading equipment at speeds of 250 to 400 cases - 7500 to 9000 dozen eggs - per hour, this amounts to more than one million eggs per day!
