Job Highlight
Support the SVP of Engineering & Project Delivery in developing business strategies, determining the competencies and infrastructure required, and implementing these plans to enable Engineering & Project Delivery to be successful.
Support the SVP of Engineering in developing and implementing Engineering Services by providing effective leadership and direction. Provide effective development and implementation of engineering designs, best-practice service delivery and quality assurance processes with an objective to meet the needs of business; customers’ requirements; and technologies.
This includes:
-
Developing and implementing business strategies and plans, best- practice processes and engineering designs;
-
Identifying and establishing required competencies, infrastructure, and logistic support;
-
Managing of best-practice service delivery, quality assurance processes, and a safe and healthy work environment;
-
Providing technical expertise and leadership, project management and field support, to deliver engineering services, implement infrastructure, and assure quality.
Specific Accountabilities
Through collateral relationships with respect to the SVP of Engineering & Project Delivery, and within the context provided by the SVP of Engineering & Project Delivery (i.e. strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance, performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.), provide the following:
Direct Output Support to the SVP of Engineering & Project Delivery:

Develop and establish a 2 - 5 year strategic direction/plan for cost efficient service delivery and quality assurance to the businesses.
-
Develop and implement revisions, changes, and adaptation to strategies, plans, and program directions to resolve issues that arise in realizing of the business goals.
-
Support the SVP of Engineering & Project Delivery in integrating Corporate strategic goals and initiatives within the business, and in overseeing their consistent application in order to realize the overall objectives and direction.
-
Establish appropriate performance measures and targets related to the achievement of business objectives.
-
Monitor and assess progress with respect to achievement of strategic plans and related processes.
-
Exercise due diligence by ensuring that effective management systems are in place to take care of the health and safety of the work force and to protect the environment.
-
Build service culture within the organization focusing on flexibility, responsiveness, speed, quality, and competitiveness.
Direct Output/Delegated Direct Output:
-
Supervise staff in the preparation of engineering designs and estimates of the projects executed by the Engineering Services Division to ensure that project objectives are met.
-
Establish training requirements to the staff of Engineering Services to ensure the design process is applied efficiently and effectively. Provide mentorship and center of excellence for developing junior staff in the Division.
-
Develop and manage resource plan/budgets for the Division. Implement improvements in areas where efficiencies can be gained to control costs on an ongoing basis.
-
Develop and implement continuously improvement process as they apply to Engineering & Project Delivery.
-
Develop specifications for technical support and ensure that appropriate controls are in place to meet implementation objectives.
-
Identify industry best practices for engineering and quality assurance processes, and technical practices. Utilize this intelligence to implement practices that will assure a consistent quality. Monitor the processes to ensure that they are properly maintained and followed consistently.
-
Develop and maintain technical expertise in the fast evolving technology in transmission and distribution areas and implement new technology where economically justified.
-
Liaise with manufacturers for driving engineering designs towards applicable industry standards and for application of new technologies.
-
Effectively represent Hydro One on technical matters with professional and industry standards organizations, the manufacturing industry, and other utilities.
-
Develop strategy and plan to supplement capabilities of staff with engineering support service providers. Ensure that subordinates have the capability to effectively administer contracted services.
-
Negotiate engineering support service contracts and conduct effectiveness reviews to ensure that the product meets the needs and to minimize risk.
-
Maintain and enhance effective working relationships with appropriate level of employees’ collective bargaining organization representatives.
-
Establish and manage strategic relationships with business partners, services providers, and vendors.
Managerial Accountabilities – Direct Output
Manage the Division and achieve the approved programs and results through:
Accountability for the outputs of others:
- Set the appropriate context for subordinates (i.e. Corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.)
- Set an effective framework of policies and procedures for the work of the Division
- Know and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements and all policies and procedures and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the Division
- Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views of conditions and potential changes affecting their work and continuous improvement opportunities
Maintaining a team of subordinates who are capable of producing the outputs required:
-
Ensure subordinates are able and willing to produce the desired output and that subordinate managers continually improve the processes for achieving the outputs
-
Assess staff capability to do the required work now and in the future
-
Conduct personal effectiveness reviews of subordinates to build relationships and trust and improve effectiveness
-
Mentor and counsel subordinates-once-removed
-
Providing leadership to subordinates, so that they collaborate competently and with full commitment, with each other in pursuing the goals set:

Translate Corporate goals and objectives into a direction which guides the operation of the Division

Communicate that direction to all staff within the Division
-
Define specific tasks for subordinates, which are required to achieve desired results, and/or to accommodate changes required within the Engineering & Project Delivery operations

Communicate expectations regarding the collateral relationship among subordinates
Providing a safe and healthy work environment:

Provide subordinates with appropriate knowledge, skills, information, work procedures and equipment to facilitate responsible behaviour which will protect their safety and contribute to their health

Provide a work environment and facilities where health and safety incidents are minimized and employees are not dissatisfied

Provide a work environment that supports and values diversity, and is free from harassment

Know and ensure subordinate’s compliance with all legal requirements, Corporate and local policies and procedures and generally accepted practices, relating to their work
Demonstrating stewardship of the assets and resources:

- Provide for security of human and physical resources, including information
