As the Indigenous Early Childhood Educator Assistant, your duties will include:
Responsibility: Keep the Senior Educator informed about preschool operations or, in her absence, the Program Coordinator.
- Report any concerns that may arise to the Senior Educator.
- Participate in developing culturally based curriculum and emergent curriculum as necessary to meet the needs of the children, consistent with Aboriginal societal values.
- Participate in program planning.
- Implement emergent curriculum and developmentally appropriate activities and experiences by using observations of the children’s interests and abilities.
- Assist with planning, implementing, and supervising indoor and outdoor activities
- Assist with organizing the space, equipment, and materials before activities begin
- Assist with clean up
- Assist with snack and meal (pick-up from Senior’s centre)
- Follow all licensing requirements
- Observe and record the children’s developmental progress on an ongoing basis.
- Document and report the need for referrals or additional services for parents and children to the Senior Educator.
- Attend regular staff meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the childcare’s children, families, and staff.
- Maintain professional development through workshops and conferences that are relevant to the field of ECE and Aboriginal language and culture.
Note: Staff attending all training endeavors, regardless of subject, are expected to abstain from the use of drugs or alcohol.
- Contribute to a positive team environment
Responsibility: Guide children’s behavior in a way that encourages positive self-development.
- Guide children positively, consistent with Aboriginal Head Start Childcare’s Guidance and Discipline Policy.
- Support children’s physical, social, emotional, creative, cognitive, and spiritual development.
Responsibility: Monitor the environment for health and safety.
- Follow the childcare’s health and safety procedures.
- Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Senior Educator and record such incidents according to the relevant procedure.

- Be continually aware of children’s allergies and other special conditions.

- Assist with children’s toileting needs as necessary.

- Through classroom observation, monitor children’s general health on an on-going basis.

- Assist in parent-teacher meetings.
- Discuss the program’s daily events with parents.
- Convey information received from parents about children’s needs or routines to other staff as appropriate.
- Support parent participation in the program.
Responsibility: Keep accurate records.
- Follow reporting procedures for abuse as stated in the Child, Family and Community Services Act and in policy and procedure manuals FRAFCA and Aboriginal Head Start Childcare.
- Complete incident reports as required.
- Maintain staff communication logs.
- Maintain an arrival/departure recording system for the children.
- Maintain daily attendance records for children.
- Complete staff attendance records according to current procedures.
- Assist with administration of evaluation tools.
- Follow all reporting procedures outlined in the procedure1s manual.
- Observe daily interactions of children and adults and record these according to current procedures when appropriate.
- Provide appropriate information, suitable for monthly reports, to be prepared by the coordinator.
Responsibility: Contribute to the ongoing operation of the program.
- Participate in developing culturally based curriculum and emergent curriculum as necessary to meet the needs of the children, consistent with Aboriginal societal values.
