Who We Need The Director & Pricing Actuary will support the pricing and product profitability management of several product lines within Securian Canada, which could include Individual Life, Critical Illness, Creditor, Individual Health and/or Group insurance. This includes product portfolios for both the Life and General company.
Reporting to the AVP, Product Pricing and as a key leader within the Pricing Team, you will collaborate closely with teams across the organization, including Product Actuarial, Finance, Marketing and Growth to ensure both competitiveness and proper financial management in product pricing.
What You Will Do
- Accountable for profitable pricing of a portfolio of life and health insurance products in accordance with the company standards and policies ensuring that appropriate discussions and signoffs are obtained as required;
- Manage and monitor a portfolio of life and health insurance products, including regularly reporting on product performance against approved risk tolerances and profitability requirements;
- Develop reinsurance strategies, as appropriate, to optimize risk and profitability against defined parameters;
- Provide direction and support on financial arrangements for new and existing partnerships;
- Make recommendations for product designs and features to balance client needs, market requirements and profitability, and support assessment of product initiatives, including new products, new distribution channels and change to existing products and distribution channels, against approved risk tolerances and profitability requirements;
- Provide strategic thought leadership and functional expertise to internal/external stakeholders including peers, cross-functional partners, and senior leadership;
- Stay abreast of emerging trends that may impact product risk and profitability, through relationships with reinsurers and industry experts;
- Engage with external partners (including distributors, Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) and reinsurers) to develop solutions to complex product and pricing challenges;
- Lead pricing workstreams for new business and existing business initiatives;
- Assist with contract and treaty negotiations with clients;
- Assist in responding to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), leading the pricing portion of the response;
- Ensure pricing methodology is sound, well documented and aligns with all applicable standards and requirements (e.g. OSFI LICAT guideline, IFRS 17 standard, etc);
- Lead and support a team of (Actuary's) to motivate and inspire them to higher levels of performance;
- Continually assess and optimize daily operations to align with and achieve corporate and departmental goals;
- Assist with recruiting across Actuarial departments; Promote risk management culture and ensure pricing methodology follows internal guidelines.
What You Will Bring
- 7+ years relevant experience covering a broad range of actuarial and financial functions including Pricing.
- Fellowship of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) / Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), or equivalent experience, is required.
- Experience leading and developing high performing teams.
- Strong pricing, product and modelling expertise in the Life & Health Insurance space, ideally within Canadian markets and product contexts. Direct experience using industry-standard pricing tools such as Axis, Microsoft Excel or equivalent.
- Creativity, curiosity and lateral thinking and the ability to anticipate and analyze the impact of product design and underwriting choices on product risk and profitability. Ability to influence management decisions and collaborate well with different functions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with acumen in both professional and business communications. Ability to conduct and facilitate discussions relating to both technical and non-technical topics.
