Lincoln Ovens is looking for a Manager, Engineering Lab!

In this role, the Mgr., Engineering Lab is responsible for managing local engineering support resources (Model Makers, Test Technicians and other staff), expenses and activities required for Cost of Poor Quality, Cost Reduction, Sustaining, New Product Development projects and Agency/Regulatory certifications. This includes but is not limited to: resource planning and allocation, outsourcing of activities outside of expertise, performance management, recruiting, policy and procedures implementation, development and coordination of training, regulatory compliance administration and special projects.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this position is based in our Mississauga, Ontario, facility. This is a full-time, permanent role that is an addition to headcount.

Major Accountability:

  • Engineering Test Lab Procurement
  • Identify the lab utility requirements needed to support all current and future test needs.
  • Identify and purchase the right materials and equipment for specific tests across several agency bodies.
  • Developing and maintaining a supplier database and implementing a supplier evaluation system to ensure the quality and reliability of goods and services.
  • Establishing procurement budgets and implementing cost-saving measures such as bulk purchasing and competitive bidding.
  • Develop lab safety and operating procedures, providing training to staff to increase transparency and compliance.
  • Management of technical and administrative resources to meet departmental objectives based on the guidance from the Director of Engineering.
  • Management of departmental sub-budget to meet AOP (Annual Operating Plan) expense targets while meeting departmental objectives.
  • Support the management and oversight of Agency/Regulatory compliance of our products and processes.
  • Evaluation and mitigation of skills and infrastructure gaps in direct reports and our facilities, suggesting training, capital improvements and execution of tasks to improve technical capabilities and performance.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Daily leadership and management of Model Shop resources to successfully support Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ), Cost Reduction (PCTO), Sustaining and New Product Development (NPD) projects and initiatives. An estimated 40% of the workload
  • Provide leadership and direction to Lab Supervisor and Lab Technicians as required in support of Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ), Cost Reduction (PCTO), Sustaining and New Product Development (NPD) projects and initiatives. An estimated 20% of the workload
  • Support the activities of the Agency Coordinator, resulting in regulatory compliance against ISO, NSF, UL and other applicable standards. Estimated at 20% of the workload.
  • Manage activities of direct reports related to Field and Sales/Service returns, including providing a monthly report of activities. Estimated at 10% of the workload.
  • Manage Engineering Lab and Model Shop resources and expenses within the planned budget. Coordinate and communicate departmental expense requirements with the Director of Engineering to meet the planned budget. Estimated at 10% of the workload
  • Identify, justify and execute human and capital improvements in the Model Shop and Engineering Lab infrastructure, testing and fabrication capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Specialized Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  1. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office experience, and excellent communication skills – required
  2. Prior managerial or supervisory experience - required
  3. Understanding of prototyping techniques and ability to evaluate supplier capabilities – required
  4. Understanding of common fabrication and assembly techniques and manufacturing - required
  5. Understanding of regulatory requirements for Food Service products (UL, NSF, etc.) – strongly recommended
  • Education and Experience
  1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  2. 5 to 8 years of experience.
  3. Required field experience in cooking appliance technical background, Manufacturing and Fabrication, Agency/Compliance
  • Working Conditions
  1. Heavy computer use.
  2. Normal office or lab environment; must be able to sit for long periods.
  3. Must be able to stand/walk/sit for extended periods.
  4. May be required to lift up to 50 Lbs.
