Position Summary We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Women’s and Children’s Health team, with a focus on the Birthing Suites Program and Antenatal/Postpartum Program . This role is ideal for a clinician with advanced expertise in high-risk obstetrics who is passionate about delivering comprehensive, patient- and family-centered care across the perinatal continuum.

As a key member of our inter-professional team, you will provide expert clinical consultation, lead care planning, and support the evolving needs of patients from antenatal assessment through to postpartum recovery. You will collaborate closely with obstetricians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, diagnostic imaging, and other specialists to ensure seamless, high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced nursing care and clinical consultation for high-risk obstetrical patients in the birthing suites and antenatal/postpartum units
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood work, ultrasounds), and develop individualized care plans
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and support delivery planning (e.g., induction of labour, caesarean section scheduling)
  • Lead and participate in patient care rounds, interprofessional education, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Support cervical ripening procedures and triage assessments in the Obstetrical Day Unit
  • Manage antenatal concerns such as hypertension, decreased fetal movement, and urinary tract infections
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and community partners to ensure continuity of care

Core Duties & Competencies

Antepartum Patients

  • Rounding, care planning, diagnostics ordering and review
  • Specialist consults and delivery planning

Obstetrical Day Unit

  • Cervical ripening (cervical Foley insertion, gel/Cervidil administration)
  • Ultrasound triage and review
  • Hypertension assessments and medication management
  • Non-stress test (NST) interpretation

Labour Assessment Unit

  • Antenatal assessments (e.g., decreased fetal movement)
  • Test ordering and interpretation
  • UTI assessment and treatment

Qualifications

  • Nurse Practitioner Degree/Master from an accredited university
  • Experience in women’s health, obstetrics, or high-risk pregnancy care
  • Current and maintained BCLS and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification
  • Fetal Health Surveillance and NST interpretation experience
  • Canadian Nurses Association Perinatal Certification (preferred)

Additional Competencies

  • Expertise in high-risk obstetrical care, including comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic management, and health promotion. Proficient in prescribing and managing medications and authorized to order and interpret diagnostic tests within the NP scope.
  • Demonstrated clinical excellence in managing complex pregnancy conditions, coordinating timely interventions, and making appropriate referrals. Skilled in interpreting diagnostic imaging such as ultrasounds, X-rays, and echocardiograms, and in performing and analyzing non-stress tests, including for multiple gestations.
  • Experienced in leading interprofessional rounds, facilitating educational sessions, and developing specialized clinics for high-risk pregnancies. Strong leadership, communication, and teaching abilities, with a proven capacity for clinical decision-making, problem-solving, and critical analysis.
  • Effective in care coordination across the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum continuum. Adept at summarizing and communicating care plans clearly to patients, families, and healthcare teams. Familiar with consultative processes and regional collaboration and committed to reflective practice and continuous improvement in clinical care and research.
