The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is an arm’s-length federal agency responsible for the shared stewardship of the lands and waters that make up the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest port. The First Nations coordinator is responsible for coordinating and participating in the development and implementation of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (port authority) First Nations relations, programs, and/or activities. This includes providing coordination and support for First Nations engagement and assisting with other related activities as required.

What You Do

  • Follow all applicable First Nations engagement guidelines, policies and procedures as they relate to the port authority, Transport Canada and/or other agencies as required in the preparation and maintenance of records of First Nations relations.
  • Plan, coordinate, participate and implement events, meetings and workshops for and relating to First Nation relations and/or programs, as required.
  • Prepare, disseminate and coordinate submissions, correspondence, records, reports, tracking tables, payment requests and information sharing with First Nations in relation to projects, operations, policies and developments.
  • Conduct research into matters relating to First Nations issues and opportunities that emerge through meetings with First Nations or on initiatives proposed by the port authority
  • Provide general business communication support to the port authority and the department as assigned, including preparing status updates, briefing notes, communication plans, presentations, meeting materials and other documents as required.
  • Provide support to project, relationship and other communication activities.
  • Perform research in support of department initiatives.
  • Write, post and maintain First Nation engagement records that may include posting project-related Web and intranet materials, as required
  • Maintain related First Nation engagement tracking databases and spreadsheets; update and expand as necessary.
  • Coordinate and participate in promotional or special events, or on project teams, as required.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

What You Bring

  • Completion of a two-year full-time diploma in communications, Indigenous Studies, political or social science, or another acceptable discipline from a recognized educational institution.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in coordinating Indigenous engagement, research, and/or Indigenous consultation activities.
  • Experience with general project communications and/or community engagement would be considered an asset, as would experience working with Indigenous communities whose traditional territories include the lower mainland.
  • Must have proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Must be a self-motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and the ability to liaise effectively and positively with both staff and outside contacts.
  • This person will have an excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a team player with a "customer service" focus.
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility to perform multiple tasks are required.
