The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information
This is an Apprenticeship position, working under the direction of a qualified Journeyman Electrician. The purpose of this position is to obtain the combination and work experience required to obtain Journeyman certification. Reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator, this position is located in Hay River and is responsible for learning how to perform electrical work on GNWT assets in the South Slave Region, and identify any electrical problems encountered during preventative maintenance checks.
Some of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position are:
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients
- Ability to keep records in order to document work performed
- Ability to use a computer
- Ability to attend the Trades Instruction course in Fort Smith or Alberta for at least one 8 week period each year.
Typically, the above would be attained by:
Completion of English 20 or 23, Math 20 or 23, Pure Math 20 and at least 10 credits in Science or the equivalent. Successful Completion of a trades Entrance exam.
Continued employment as an apprentice is conditional upon the completion of the required hours of experience, coursework and exam for each level in the apprenticeship program.
