Position Summary

The Clinical Extern (Extern) is a transitional role which allows students to develop the knowledge, skill and judgement to work toward the scope of practice of regulated staff. The externship allows students to participate in socio-cultural environment, building on skills of communication, interprofessional collaboration and problem-solving development. The program supports clinical learning and professional development into regulated health care roles.

Externs are employed by the hospital as unregulated health care providers and provide client-centered care to patients and their families. Externs contribute to plans of care, document, provide on-going support, and assist registered nursing staff to enhance the functioning of the nursing team.

Externs work within a unit nursing team under direct and/or indirect supervision by an appointed registered nursing professional. Externs may perform pre-identified Controlled Acts as defined by the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated by a supervising regulated health care professional (HCP) who is authorized to perform them.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist registered staff with care of patients with predictable outcomes
  • Contribute to ongoing patient assessment and care, including but not limited to measuring vital signs, maintaining and removing of IVs, completion of screening tools
  • Report any issues, concerns, and changes patient status in a timely fashion to the supervising regulated HCP
  • Assist patients with repositioning, transferring, and ambulating after receiving appropriate education as per hospital policy
  • Safely operate assistive devices as per hospital policy, including but not limited to bath chairs, specialized mattresses, and mechanical lifts
  • Assist with patient feeding, meal trays retrieval, and accurate recording of nutritional intake
  • Provide measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries
  • Facilitate patient comfort and safety by ensuring the environment is clean, tidy and free of hazards
  • Update patient communication boards
  • Assist with after death care
  • Document care provided, as per OSMH policy
  • Maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
  • Practice behaviours consistent with OSMH’s mission, vision and values
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the direct manager

Qualifications

Education:

  • Nursing Student:

o between second and fourth year of a CNO approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or
o in final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program

  • Respiratory Therapy Student: entering final year of studies

  • BLS Certification required

Qualities:

  • Physical and emotional health suitable for demands of patient care

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Good work ethic, work performance, and attendance record
