About the role
Our client, a trusted and continually growing group in the construction industry are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead their accounting operations and support their ongoing growth.
This is a fantastic permanent career opportunity based just outside of St. John's, NL, ideal for a designated accountant (CPA) with proven experience in the construction industry, dedicated leadership, and strong analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities for the Job:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, and payroll
- Job costing and general ledger maintenance
- Oversee project budgeting, cost tracking, and variance analysis
- Preparation of financial statements, reports, and forecasts
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls and accounting policies
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure financial efficiency and job profitability
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and financing needs
- Ensure compliance with tax laws, regulatory filings, and financial reporting standards
- Work with external auditors and manage year-end audit processes
- Provide financial insight and strategic recommendations to senior leadership
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
Experience & Attributes for Success:
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required
- 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction or a related industry
- Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, and construction financial operations
- Proficient in accounting software (ideally Sage 300, Jonas, or similar) and Microsoft Excel
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and leadership skills
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders
