Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Property Accountant will be responsible for full-cycle accounting for a diverse portfolio encompassing commercial, residential, and hospitality properties. They will prepare financial statements, budgets, bank reconciliations, and year-end audit materials, while also providing monthly reporting for multiple entities, including variance analysis and cash flow management. Additionally, the Property Accountant will support both the property and hotel accounting departments on a range of initiatives, such as financial reporting, managing internal controls, and coordinating with the building operations team to ensure accurate and efficient financial processes.

This Property Accountant role is a full-time, 12-month term position covering a maternity leave.

As the Property Accountant, you will get to:

  • Carry out full-cycle accounting activities, including tenant billing, collection of receivables, supporting the payables process, posting journal entries, and maintaining tenant ledgers.
  • Prepare timely and accurate journal entries as part of the day-to-day accounting tasks and financial month-end close process.
  • Deliver timely financial reports, including quarterly financial statements with actual vs. budget variance analysis and comprehensive quarterly financial statements with variance commentary.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and provide a summary and analysis of available data to support efficient property operations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, including preparation of bank and account reconciliations, review and input of vendor invoices for both property and hotel accounting teams, and monitoring receipts with necessary follow-up actions.
  • Prepare bi-monthly accounts receivable reports, investigate related issues, and calculate and process tenant charges as needed.
  • Identify and coordinate timely responses to vendor invoice discrepancies, providing possible solutions.
  • Coordinate with the operations team to ensure all possible revenues are captured and maintain seamless correspondence with tenants.
  • Assist in delivering on the year-end audit requirements.
  • Support ad hoc financial analysis and calculations and assist property and hotel accounting teams with other duties as required.
  • Operate with the highest level of confidentiality and integrity on all files.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • The successful candidate will have completed a post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in accounting or a business-related discipline.
  • They will have at least 5 years of full-cycle accounting experience, ideally as a Property Accountant.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills are essential.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Office are required.
  • Proficiency in the use of property management software is necessary.
  • Experience with Yardi Voyager is considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and controls, along with solid analytical and problem-solving skills, is required.
