About the role

The Area Vice President (AVP) is a pivotal leadership role responsible for the overall operational excellence, profitability, and strategic growth of all designated locations within their assigned area. This individual will ensure that all business activities align with company goals and philosophies, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and positive employee relations. The AVP will provide strong leadership and guidance to local managers and Regional Vice Presidents (RVPs), ensuring the effectiveness of the management team and promoting a work environment characterized by consistency, fairness, and equity for all employees.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Financial Management:

  • Develop and Implement Business Plans: Collaborate with each region and operation to prepare comprehensive annual business plans. These plans will be effectively implemented by local management and designed to achieve desired branch, regional, and corporate results, including:
    • Safety goals and standards
    • Cost of operations
    • Capital requirements
    • Productivity standards
    • Desired profit margins
    • Growth objectives
    • Performance goals
  • Consolidate & Forecast: Consolidate regional plans as needed for accurate forecasting and performance reviews.
  • Adhere to Policy and Processes: Operate in strict adherence to the position's Delegation of Authority responsibilities.
  • Optimize Resources: Strategically utilize liquid waste volumes and the transportation network to achieve low-cost, competitive disposal.
  • Allocate Capital: Effectively allocate capital and resources within the region to accomplish both profit and growth objectives.
  • Fiduciary Responsibility: Act as a fiduciary, prioritizing the best interests of GFL Environmental Services and diligently avoiding conflicts of interest.
  • Organizational Development: Review compensation and incentive plans within the area, recommending and approving changes to key positions and continuing to build depth and succession planning for the Area.
  • Implement Pricing Policies: Implement pricing policies and serve as the pricing authority for service and equipment sales at the branch and operating levels.

Growth & Market Leadership:

  • Drive Growth Initiatives: Direct and coordinate growth and expansion through a variety of strategies, including:
    • Effective sales programs
    • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) opportunities
    • Government contracts
    • Strategic acquisitions
    • Development of new projects and services All initiatives are aimed at strengthening market position.

Operational Excellence & Compliance:

  • Promote Company Standards: Champion and sustain the company's high standards, sound principles, and positive public image.
  • Foster Safety Culture: Actively promote and ensure a robust safety culture across all operations.
  • Monitor & Analyze Performance: Routinely review operating results and recommend strategic changes or solutions to the Executive Leadership team.
  • Financial Performance Review: Periodically review regional financial results with local management, developing comprehensive action plans to address and correct unacceptable trends or results.
  • Ensure Staffing & Training: Verify that each region or area has adequate and well-trained management and staff to consistently accomplish and exceed all branch, regional, and corporate desired results.
  • Ensure Compliance & Ethics: Ensure all business affairs are conducted ethically, in a manner that protects the company’s image and reputation, and in full conformity with applicable federal, state/provincial, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, other orders, and all company policies, procedures, and directives from Executive Management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies:

  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive leadership and management experience within the waste management industry.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of excellent leadership, team development, and motivational skills.
  • Communication: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective interaction with employees at all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to analyze complex situations, develop strategic solutions, and drive successful implementation.
  • Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of financial statements, budgeting, and profit and loss management.
  • Education: MBA preferred or significant relevant leadership experience may substitute.

Travel & Work Environment:

  • Frequent Travel: Significant travel within the assigned territory is required.
  • Additional Travel: Other travel may be required, including international travel.
  • Work Setting: Primarily an indoor office environment (approximately 70%-80% of the time) with a generally moderate noise level.
  • Requirements:
    • Valid Driver’s License is required.
    • Valid Passport is required for international travel.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Physical: Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and climb.
  • Visual: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus are required.
