Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The sessional instructor will be responsible for the delivery of PHYT 5202.3: Scientific Inquiry. PHYT 5202 is a non-clinical, mandatory physiotherapy course offered during the Fall 2025 term of year one in the MSc.PT curriculum. The course is offered using a blended design of synchronous and asynchronous methods; the timetable is set for this course, with synchronous class time scheduled from 10:05-11:25am on Monday and Wednesday in the Collaborative Health Education Building Room 150 for the Fall term. It is expected that students receive no more than six hours of course related engagement per week (including lectures, labs, assignments, studying etc.).

Learning activities are designed to develop the student’s knowledge, skills and behaviours related to scientific inquiry and use of evidence in practice, including finding, appraising and applying evidence in the context of evidence-based, patient-centered physiotherapy. The course frameworks (WHO ICF model; the 5As of Evidence Based Practice; and the CIHC National Interprofessional Competency Framework) integrate patient values/circumstances with application of scientific principles, including critical appraisal and synthesis of best-available evidence. The course provides the foundation for application and further development of knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice in all courses in the MScPT program.

In this 3-credit hour course, the instructor will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class which includes lectures, assignments, test preparation and evaluation of students. In addition, the instructor will hold regular office hours for consultation with students.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

PhD or Masters degree; knowledge of evidence-based practice skills including appraisal and application of different types of research to address a specific types of focused clinical research questions, measurement methods, data analyses, documentation of key features of articles, and synthesis of evidence. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) and experience with online learning management systems (i.e. Brightspace) preferred. Experience in implementing working collaboratively with instructors and teaching assistants and in conveying the clinical relevance or application of knowledge to physiotherapy is an asset.
