Location: Kingston General Hospital Site (Primary), Hotel Dieu Hospital Site

In accordance with Article 9.05, where the previous incumbent returns to this position within the thirty (30) day trial period this position shall be deemed not vacant and the posting will be cancelled. Should the vacancy be cancelled, applicants to this posting shall be notified.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the general direction of the Professional Practice Leader, and the supervision of the Physiotherapist (PT), the Physiotherapist Assistant (PTA) aids in the provision of physiotherapy interventions deemed appropriate by the Physiotherapist for inpatients of Kingston General Hospital. The PTA is a part of the interprofessional team and is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy. The PTA demonstrates an awareness of and is responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement, completing activities that are directed towards a patient and family-centered environment and that contribute to quality, operational efficiency, professional and program development.

Within this role the PTA is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides physiotherapy interventions with patients. Interventions may include but not limited to mobility aid fitting and preparation, mobility training, education, chest therapy, therapeutic exercise, modality application and/or orthotic application. Maintains knowledge of patient’s condition when carrying out interventions with patients. Participates in planning, modifying and coordinating physiotherapy interventions with the Physiotherapist.

  • Assists the Physiotherapist in assessment and re-assessment of medically stable and unstable patients. Maintains knowledge of patient’s condition when carrying out portions of assessment/re-assessment.

  • Utilizes the patient record to collect information related to demographics, vitals, musculoskeletal and functional status and/or document provision of physiotherapy treatment using the DARP format.

  • Inspects, maintains, stores and tracks the Unit’s supply of mobility equipment and assistive devices. Facilitates maintenance and purchase requests as necessary.

  • Performs clerical duties such as completing portions of physiotherapy specific-forms with patient data, photocopying, and creating informational material related to physiotherapy intervention.

  • Completes computer tasks for patient data collection, workload measurement and communication.

  • Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating physiotherapy service delivery,

  • Supervises and evaluates students on placement from PTA/OTA diploma program

  • Provides in-services to healthcare staff and Nursing Students regarding mobility equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a recognized PTA diploma program or PTA and OTA (dual trained) diploma program.

  • As a minimum, 6 week placement in acute care and/or inpatient rehabilitation setting is required.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • Strong observational skills.

  • Ability to problem-solve.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Initiative, creativity and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Ability to accept and carry out directions from several Physiotherapists in different Programs

  • Basic computer skills (e.g. workload measurement tool and email).

  • General knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Flexibility, adaptability and multitasking.

  • Ability to transfer and mobilize patients requiring moderate to maximal assistance.

  • Knowledge of vitals and blood values.

  • Knowledge of critical care devices and lines.

  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.

  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
