This role on the In Situ Contact Engineering team provides key onsite technical support and input to operations and other functional teams within the Firebag Field Production Unit. You will be accountable for providing technical guidance—ensuring safe, reliable, and optimized performance within your unit area—while supporting and directing junior support members for the Production Unit.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Seven or more years experience in Process or Contact Engineering at an oilsands, refinery, petro-chemical and/or pipeline distributions facilities
  • Experience at a SAGD Facility with in-depth knowledge on key processes
  • A bachelor’s degree in chemical, petroleum engineering or equivalent
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as a professional engineering
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Familiar with P&ID's, process flow diagrams, and other process related engineering documentation
  • Understands complex processes, and strives to develop and implement continuous improvements and creative process enhancements
  • Collaborate with others to achieve the best results and deliver the most value

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and provide direction for contact engineers supporting responsible Production Unit to safely achieve maximum throughput
  • Champion OEMS processes while representing technical team on the Production Unit
  • Act as point of contact to define and interpret Production Unit Technical Operating Envelope
  • Primary contact for any production planning, throughput/bottleneck identification or production reconciliation pertaining to the assigned Production Unit
  • Technical liaison to Process Engineering and Development teams
  • Develop and review clear problem definitions and opportunity statements for Production Unit area
  • Support baseline and cyclic PHAs, CHAs, and Turnaround planning and execution for responsible Production Unit
  • Lead process related incident investigations with cross-functional teams for Production Unit
  • Technical monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) and collaborate with operations to ensure operational targets are met, required corrective actions are communicated and perform effective follow-ups
  • Identify, communicate, and own the troubleshooting of short and long cycle issues
  • Develop tools to improve both process and equipment monitoring proactive technical monitoring and performance projections
  • Perform calculations to identify required process conditions, production loss, emission spills and required chemical treatment requirements
  • Support for regulatory reporting, operational procedure reviews, management of change (MOC) execution, risk reviews, bottleneck identification and plant turnarounds
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts through stewardship of the MOC process among the Contact Engineering discipline
  • Champion maintenance of controlled engineering documents for Production Unit including process flow diagrams (PFD), heat and material balance (H&MB), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and TOE (Safe operating limits)

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Firebag location, which is our largest in situ operation and one of the largest in the world (located 120 km northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta) in a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) rotation
  • The shift schedule is a 4 days on / 3 days off rotation; 10-hour shifts, Monday to Thursday with occasional on-call requirements to meet business needs
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • The successful candidate be able to fly our of our hubs of Edmonton or Calgary
