The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlil̓w̓ətaɬ nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 52,600 public school teachers throughout the province of BC.

The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. This is an in-person position based out of 550 West 6th Avenue, in Vancouver.

Function and Purpose

Under the general direction of the Controller and Senior Accountant, the Intermediate Accountant is responsible for all revenue transactions, invoicing and recoveries, payables transactions including investments, interfund and intercompany accounts, and loans.

Duties

  • Prepares and reviews transactions, ensuring timely posting.

  • Prepares and reviews monthly journal entries.

  • Assists with the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements for various funds.

  • Ensures that all payment requests are reasonable and properly authorized.

  • Prepares weekly, monthly and annual accounting and financial reports as required.

  • Maintains record keeping for BCTF related entities.

  • Works with the Senior Accountant, Financial Planning & Analysis to coordinate cash flow statements, cash activity reports, and other financial reports.

  • Keeps up to date on related policies and procedures and maintains an awareness of budget changes.

  • Co-ordinates customer service to the Provincial Specialty Associations (PSA), and on month end closing, ensuring that all transactions are finalized.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, including the ability to perform complex macros and functions.

Required Experience

This position requires four (4) years directly related accounting experience preferably in a unionized environment demonstrating the following:

  • four (4) years' experience in an intermediate accounting role.

  • four (4) years' experience preparing financial presentations, including the use of business intelligence.

  • four (4) years' experience with budgeting.

  • four (4) years' experience working with excel in an accounting environment at an intermediate level.

Education and training

Accredited Institution:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree from Provincially accredited university or equivalent.

  • Completion of Chartered Professional Accountants' Professional Education Program (Cores 1 & 2, and Electives 1 & 2) or equivalent.

Professional Certifications and Designations

  • Chartered Professional Accountants' student membership in good standing.
