Recreation Aide

Haro Park Centre, located in Vancouver’s West End, was established in 1980, and is a community of care with 218 residents living in a mixed setting of Independent Suites, Assisted Living and Residential Care. Position Summary

With the direction of the Recreation Therapists, the Recreation Aide carries out established Therapeutic Recreation activity programs. The Recreation Aide contributes to the the improvement of the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of all Haro Park community members (residents).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the supervising therapist in implementing therapeutic recreation programs, Promotes, publicizes and carries out established therapeutic recreation programs for residents including but not limited to outings, exercise, social events, entertainment, crafts, games, etc. sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activity projects, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents, oversees the residents activities and reports any concerns to the Director of Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Assist residents to and from recreation programming.
  • Assist, encourage and motivate residents to participate in recreation programming
  • Observe and report any changes in residents to the Manager of Therapeutic Recreation or appropriate team member.
  • Carries out resident activity programs outside the home; checks that resident has appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity, confirms details of proposed activity with supervising therapist, co-ordinates the movement of patients/residents during the activity and teaches the techniques of related activities.
  • Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  • Ensure recreation supplies and equipment are used, stored and maintained in a safe and efficient manner and report faulty or unsafe equipment to supervisors
  • Assist with orientation of new residents/volunteers
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Grade 12 and completion of a recognized therapeutic recreation assistant program, Two years recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid First Aide, FoodSafe and Serving It Right certificate
  • Valid Class 4 Driver's License
  • Experience working with residents with dementia is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position including the ability to walk, lift, operate and carry equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate in English effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with residents, family and staff members.
  • Ability to encourage, motivate and engage residents while assisting music therapist
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with residents, family and staff members.
  • Sensitivity and a passion for meeting the needs of older adults and an ability to interact with residents, families and members of the community.
  • Preferred experience and knowledge of PointClickCare MS Office, and Windows Programs

Job Types: Part-time, Casual

Pay: $29.83 per hour

Schedule:

  • Day shift
  • Evening shift
  • On call
  • Weekends as needed

Licence/Certification:

  • Class 4 Licence (preferred)
