Career Opportunity

Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for (2) Construction Director(s) to join our Construction Management team! As part of the Construction Management team, you will be responsible to manage a portfolio of construction programs, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and consistency in delivery, quality, and compliance by performing various strategic, technical, analytical and administrative functions to ensure the successful execution of the construction contracts.

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Head, Construction Management, you will oversee Deputy Construction Managers and their respective construction management teams, who are responsible to deliver their assigned construction contracts Safely, on Time, to Budget, and with the requisite Quality.

Construction contracts include complex, large scale major projects, new transit facilities, existing facility renovations and state of good repair works, as well as facilitating, overseeing and providing quality assurance on Transit Expansion projects completed by Metrolinx.

You will also collaborate with Project Directors and Teams to review contracts, manage risks, oversee engagement, ensure quality, improve processes, track performance, and align programs with strategic goals.

This also involves the following:

  • Ensure construction programs align with the EC&E group’s strategic objectives and TTC’s long-term infrastructure goals.

  • Set performance benchmarks and KPIs for contract execution and teams; monitor progress and adjust plans as needed.

  • Identify inefficiencies in processes and propose improvements to enhance productivity and quality.

  • Translating departmental strategies into actionable plans and ensuring compliance with policies and ensuring processes and procedures are up to date and are applied consistently across all programs.

  • Ensure constructability reviews are conducted to confirm that the project is feasible as designed and that the planned construction sequencing addresses the needs of TTC maintenance and operations, as well as public safety during the construction of the project.

  • Oversee and guide stakeholder engagement plans across programs and monitor public and stakeholder sentiment and work to maintain a positive image of the TTC’s construction efforts.

  • Responsible for resource planning to ensure the department is staffed appropriately.

  • Overseeing budgets, schedules, and resource allocation for multiple projects.

  • Guide Deputy Construction Managers and other staff, fostering a culture of accountability.

  • In conjunction with Commercial Management, manage the review, analysis and evaluation of construction claims submitted by the contractors and providing recommendations to Management on settlements, participating in any litigation resulting from the contracts.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • Your educational background will consist of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (e.g. engineering), with progressively senior experience in the management of heavy construction projects, with direct experience on construction sites in an urban and/or transit environment; or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng), a Licensed Architect (OAA), or a Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset.
  • Additionally, hands-on experience in the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of transit facilities and structures.
  • Extensive, in-depth knowledge (technical and field) and direct senior experience in the management of complex, large scale heavy construction projects, with direct experience on construction sites in an urban and/or transit environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering and construction management principles, methodologies, practices, techniques, materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior capacity with constructability, construction engineering, construction contract development and enforcement, construction supervision and inspection, construction safety, quality control processes, and construction documentation.
  • Sound knowledge of contract administration and claims management techniques.
  • Sound knowledge of construction legislation and regulations, standards and codes, including the Construction Act, Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act: Regulations for Construction Projects, Local Trade Union Contracts, environmental legislation, and other pertinent rules and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to lead and work with multi-disciplined teams, deal with complex issues, and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills; ability to recognize problems, prepare and interpret complex reports, and define and evaluate solutions.
  • Strong presentation, and oral and written (report-writing) communication skills.
  • Proficient in software applications relevant to the work (including Microsoft Office).
  • A valid Province of Ontario Class G Driver's license.
