Job Description The Registered Respiratory Therapist specializes in the delivery of evidence-based cardio-respiratory interventions. Their practice is based on an in-depth knowledge of critical care gained through education and clinical experience. They work with inter-professional teams in the ICU, Emergency, Medicine Units, Labor and Delivery and NICU settings to advance their practices, improve patient outcomes and provide clinical expertise to effect system-wide changes to improve program of care. They will monitor and manage metrics designed at improving THP standards of practice and care – to help pioneer and bring THP to the forefront of cutting edge Respiratory Therapy care in Canada. They will work both autonomously and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals holding influence over three main domains: safe patient care, excellence in practice and the healthcare system.
Responsibilities

Ensures safe provision of cardio-respiratory care.

Works with all patient populations (e.g. Adult, pediatric and neonatal).

Acts as a mentor, role model and expert resource for patient respiratory care to the all staff within the inter-professional program team.

Provide and assist with educational outreach initiatives within THP.

Supports academic teaching by providing/sharing knowledge with patients, families, RT students and other health care professionals.

Models professionalism and lifelong learning through participation in continuing education and research initiatives.

In collaboration with the RT Clinical Educator, the RRT provides leadership in order to ensure appropriate orientation of new staff.

Works with adult, pediatric, and neonatal:

Intubate/extubate

Insert arterial punctures/arterial line

Conduct patient assessment

Patient transport (internal and external)

Perform respiratory therapeutics and diagnostics

Member of the Critical Care Rapid Response Teams.

Member of the Cardiac Arrest Team.
Qualifications
- Excellent knowledge of RT practice.
- Excellent knowledge of critical and complex patient populations and related pathologies as well as current knowledge of the most recent technological advancements in respiratory care.
- Superior critical thinking, enhanced conflict resolution, and the ability to collaborate inter-professionally with a wide variety of health care disciplines.
- Member in good standing with no limitations with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario.
- Member in good standing with C.S.R.T. and/or R.T.S.O.
- BCLS, ACLS, and NRP required.
- PALS preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in health related field preferred.
- Two (2) years current critical care experience would be a definite asset.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Ability to work various shifts as required.
- Positive work and attendance record is essential.
- Evidence of on-going professional development.
- Specialty training in other applied areas would be an asset – e.g. research, leadership, quality improvement.
- Understanding of use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
