Your Tasks

  • Utilize specialized skill and knowledge of tool-building practices to fabricate dies, tools, jigs to very close tolerances and make decisions on the best method for machining or fitting sample parts or sketches in a time-effective manner. Central to this position is the function of troubleshooting for potential problems.
  • Lays out and completes jobs from start to finish, including tool proving, calculation of angles and distances.
  • Develops and makes all types of dies with automatic feeding mechanisms, as well as makes sectional components.
  • Ensures that all dies are serviced regularly.
  • Participates in ongoing Continuous Improvement processes.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective preventative maintenance program. Ensures that all tools are properly fit for use.
  • Orders appropriate spare parts and/or ensures that materials are available to fabricate spare parts.
  • Provides training for, and oversees the work of apprentices.
  • Ensures the safe operation/maintenance and repair of equipment used to carry out tasks (i.e. milling machines, surface grinder, lathe, drill, press, shadow graph, crane, precision-measuring tools such as micrometers, boring heads etc.).
  • Dismantles and repairs or replaces parts of damaged dies and fixtures, fits and assembles parts and tests repaired dies for proper operation.
  • Verifies conformance of dies, new or repaired, to specification by checking dimensions to print, cutting clearances, forms and alignments as required.
  • Operates cranes safely to remove and/or relocate dies to specific work stations/equipment.
  • Builds various stamping dies from die layout and part print.
  • Troubleshoots all types of dies both in the press and on the bench.
  • Orders purchases as required through the supervisor.
  • Takes direction from Tool Room Supervisor, as applicable.
  • Maintains safety standard and cleanliness of workplace and equipment as outlined by company policy.
  • Protects own health and safety by working in compliance with established safe work practices and procedures.
  • Any other reasonable request made by management.
  • Contributes to a safe, clean and comfortable work environment that complements the Occupational Health and Safety Act by ensuring the principles of the 5S discipline (simplify, separate, sanitize, standardize and support) are supported and adhered to.
  • Ensures he/she is in full compliance with the laws of Ontario and/or any other province or state, while representing KIRCHHOFF Automotive or during the use of any KIRCHHOFF Automotive provided equipment.
  • Judgement – exercises judgement re:
    • Anticipates potential problems and solves within appropriate time frames using continuous-improvement methods
  • Accountability – is accountable in areas of:
    • Provides analytical progress reports to Tool Room Supervisor for work on press tool or manufacturing progress for continuous improvement
    • Work is performed under little supervision
    • Builds, repairs and maintains tools and jigs in limited time to meet production and engineering requirements
    • Maintains accurate records of all ongoing repairs and improvements of tools and jigs
    • Keeps up to date on all new tooling processes and techniques through reading and
  • Contacts – establishes/maintains relationships: Function is performed in communication with representatives from Press Shop and Engineering

Your Profile

Work Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive die experience
  • Must have all tools common to trade practice
  • Proficient in reading and working with blueprints
  • Capable of working with varied ranges of ferrous and non-ferrous materials
  • Proficient in workshop theory and calculation
  • Ability to work with SPC

Skills

  • Competent in all Tool Room machining to close tolerances
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Able to take leadership on all tasks required
  • Capable of training apprentices and assessing skill levels
  • Able to design and build prototypes and prototypes’ tooling
  • Able to troubleshoot tooling problems and estimate timelines for resolution

  • Recognized technical trade certificate – Tool & Die Maker
