We manage our business on a weekly basis and are now seeking a strategic and hands-on Controller to take the lead in our finance function.
Position Summary
The Controller is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial health and performance of the company. This role works directly with ownership and senior leadership to manage all accounting functions, maintain strong cash flow, and provide timely financial insights that support decision-making. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, thrives under pressure, and excels in a fast-paced, high-volume construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Financial Leadership
- Partner with ownership to provide strategic financial guidance and analysis.
- Support business goals with forecasting, modeling, and performance tracking.
- Recommend actions to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
2. Cash Flow Management
- Maintain weekly cash flow forecasts and ensure liquidity for all business needs.
- Oversee receivables, payables, and vendor payments to support healthy cash cycles.
- Manage financial institution relationships and collections.
3. Job Costing & Project Support
- Implement job costing systems in Ready Build and QuickBooks.
- Collaborate with Estimators and PMs to align budgets and costs.
- Provide variance analysis and profitability reporting on active jobs.
4. Reporting & Compliance
- Deliver weekly and monthly financial reports to ownership.
- Lead month-end and year-end close procedures.
- Coordinate tax filings and year-end packages with external accountants.
5. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process with department input.
- Update rolling forecasts and flag financial risks or opportunities.
- Guide hiring and investment decisions with financial insight.
6. System Management & Implementation
- Manage accounting systems (QuickBooks, Ready Build) and Excel reporting.
- Drive process improvements and financial system integrity.
- Lead full implementation and setup of new platforms (e.g., Ready Build).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
- 5+ years in a senior accounting or Controller role in construction/design-build.
- Deep understanding of job costing, WIP, and construction budget control.
- Proficient with QuickBooks, and advanced Excel.
- Proven track record of cash flow management and reporting under tight timelines.
- Hands-on and detail-driven, with strong communication skills.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience in companies with $5M–$20M revenue.
- Familiarity with Canadian GAAP and tax standards.
- Strong initiative with continuous improvement mindset.
- Calm, decisive, and deadline-oriented leadership style.
