About the role
Job Summary:
Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating activity programs for clients/ residents. Encourages client/resident participation in individual and group recreational activities related to their assessed needs, ability and interests. Participates in client/resident personal care relative to the clients’/residents’ assessed needs for activities of daily living
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Collaborates with the inter-disciplinary team to develop social and recreational approaches to individualize client/resident care. Participates in resident care conferences, and team meetings.
- Carries out client/resident activity programs outside the facility such as bus trips and gardening. Checks that client/resident has appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity. Confirms details of proposed activities with other related staff. Co-ordinates the movement of clients/residents during the activity and teaches the techniques of related activities.
- Carries out client/resident activity programs such as arts and crafts, sports, music, woodworking, cooking, gardening and exercises as directed. Sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for the activity. Teaches techniques of related activities to clients and residents. Oversees the client/resident activities and reports problems and/or changes to supervisor.
- Provides assistance with client/resident activities of daily living such as occasional feeding on bus trips to the community.
- Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs such as birthday teas and bus trips and demonstrates related techniques as required.
- Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and identifies supply needs to appropriate staff. Transports a variety of supplies and/or materials as required.
- Arranges for handiDART pick-up for bus trips to the community.
- Assists in embarking and disembarking passengers. Maintains related documentation with care staff
- Reports hazards, unusual occurrences, accidents, and unsafe or faulty equipment/furniture to the Director of Resident Services or designate.
- Promotes, monitors, and responds to Resident Safety issues.
- Attends in-service training and workshops as required by the employer.
- EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Grade 12 education - Completion of recognized Recreational Program
- 2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Food Safe Certificate
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to deal with others effectively
- Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position
- Ability to teach and lead groups
- Ability to operate related equipment
- Ability to work independently, as well as with the inter-disciplinary team and volunteers
