Job Description
The AESO is undergoing a transformative restructuring of Alberta’s electricity market through the Restructured Energy Market (REM) program a multi-year, enterprise-wide initiative focused on implementing a new Market Management System (MMS) and integrating it with other mission-critical systems and processes across the organization.
The MMS will enable the AESO to operate the Alberta electricity market with greater efficiently and reliably ensuring power gets to where it needs to be at the right time and cost.
Reporting to the Director, Core Business Solutions, we are seeking a Senior Functional Business Analyst with a strong background in the electric utility sector and deep experience in complex system implementations and product management to join our dynamic team.
This role will be a key position in the implementation of the MMS and will transition to a role on the product team for ongoing operations for the lifecycle of the MMS system, ensuring the solution meets the evolving needs of the organization while delivering value across the market.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead stakeholder workshops to gather, document and validate business requirements and define MMS functionality scope.
- Translate business need into clear and actionable functional requirements; acting as the functional liaison between business and technical team members; as well as vendor.
- Manage epics, user stories, tasks and backlog as required, supporting SCRUM and Project Management with delivery.
- Establish end-to-end process diagrams; outlining as-is and defining to-be to support the design and delivery of the MMS solution.
- Identification of gaps, or opportunities for enhancements or efficiencies across product delivery.
- Work with cross functional teams; supporting and contributing to Quality Assurance, Technical Teams, Change Management etc.
- Support and validate vendor design documents, ensuring consistency and completeness across business requirements.
- Support SIT/UAT testing, issue triage and root cause analysis during design / implementation.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation across business requirements, functional specifications, traceability, and change.
- Lead solution validation sessions with key stakeholders; ensuring delivered functionality meets business need.
- Analyze and report on data to identify metrics, KPIs and business insights across design and delivery.
- Facilitate consensus across business requirements, priorities, and decisions.
- Provide expertise and guidance on industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies in the electrical utility sector.
- Support cross-functional organizational activities; training, communications.
- Support the delivery of operational readiness and cutover planning.
- Continue to support the ongoing design and development of the MMS product; ensuring the solution aligns with the evolving needs of the business and market.
What you’ll bring to us:
- 10+ years in business analysis or related roles with experience in project and product management SDLC delivery using both agile and waterfall methodologies, including sprint ceremonies.
- Strong technical acumen in system architecture, APIs, data, and proficiency in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate across teams and simplify complex concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
- Adaptable and resilient to shifting priorities and timelines.
- Proven ability to build strong business and technical relationships to support large-scale projects involving legacy systems and new technology.
- Experience with Azure DevOps.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience in the electrical utility industry and with GE products or similar tools.
- Proven success leading projects from inception to delivery, managing multiple complex cross-functional initiatives.
- Knowledge of change management principles to secure stakeholder buy-in.
- Skilled in end-to-end system analysis, design, and functional analyst roles on Product Teams post-implementation.
- Experience leading requirements gathering, facilitating delivery, and mentoring team members throughout the system lifecycle.
