DESCRIPTION:
Under the Direction of Environmental Services Manager, the Environmental Assistant performs assigned functions in patient service, staff and/or public areas, according to established schedules with prescribed Departmental methods, in order to provide a safe and pleasant environment for patients, staff and visitors
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the KHSC strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Dusts, cleans, sanitizes and disinfects all furniture, appliances, and bathroom facilities in assigned area. Maintains floors, elevators and stairwells by sweeping, wet and dry mopping. Empties, cleans and relines waste containers. Washes ceilings, walls, lights, windows, vents. Maintains hard surface floors and stairs by sweeping, wet and dry mopping, waxing, recoating and buffing. Vacuums and spot cleans carpeted floors. Extracts and/or power cleans carpets. Cleans up spills and floods. Changes curtains and drapes when necessary

Cleans inpatient units including patient rooms, bathrooms, nurse’s stations, med rooms, lounges, storage Rooms etc. Removes linen from beds and places soiled linen in designated areas. Washes, assembles (as appropriate) and makes beds, bassinets and isolettes. Empties, cleans, and relines waste containers. Transfers clean or soiled linen from collection points to designated areas.

Transfers all waste including but not limited to confidential shredding, biomedical and chemical waste, sharps, etc. to designated areas.

Participates in the evaluation of new products, procedures and equipment. Provides inventory maintenance by restocking patients/staff supplies.

Compiles orders and receives linen from Kingston Regional Hospital Laundry according to established departmental procedures and utilizing current software. Transports clean linen to floors and transports soiled linen from floors to soiled holding area. Makes alterations and repairs to linen products. Sews special items as required. Responds to requests for additional linen

Launder slings for lifts and sleeves for transport boards. Organizes slings by size and type, perform visual inspections, records inspections, reports (delivers) damaged items to the Manager. Launder special items such as ER restraints, curtains, respiratory filters, baby items, etc. as required

Transports furniture, equipment and audiovisual equipment, beds, tables, desks, etc., as required and completes moves and set ups for meetings, conferences and special events.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.

Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak English.

Proven ability to attend work regularly.

Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time. Demonstrated ability to push and pull a minimum of 50 lbs. Frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Demonstrated ability to frequently bend, stretch, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and twist. Significant combination of eye-hand coordination, and manual finger dexterity to operate specific equipment.
