Specific Accountabilities:
Provides reference services for patrons:
- Investigates and answers in-depth reference questions.
- Interprets the information needs of the patron through reference questions/interviews thereby establishing the level and detail of information needed.
- Consults resources available to provide required information.
- Provides the patron with demonstration or instruction for the successful use of library research tools (electronic databases, periodical indexes, OPAC).
- Leads the patron to appropriate material that addresses their information need.
- Provides support for academic misconduct remediation.
- Reviews all new materials received to maintain knowledge of the TLC collection.
- Reviews and recommends open educational resources to faculty.
- Records statistics on reference services provided.
- Provides support and instruction on information literacy, academic integrity, and or copyright to students, faculty, and staff.
- Assists in the maintenance of the Library Services section of the Teaching & Learning Commons website.
- Assists in maintaining the collection, in all formats:
- Promotes the services available in the Teaching & Learning Commons to patrons and the greater College community and suggests changes for all aspects of the Teaching & Learning Commons operation to improve the level of service.
About the Position:
This is a temporary full time Appendix D position, replacing a bargaining unit employee, working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $36.29. This position will start in August 2025 and will end on or before October 1, 2026. Some evening hours may be required as per the schedule.
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic Services, the successful candidate provides in person and virtual reference services for all patron types (students, faculty, staff). Assists with cataloguing of materials and maintenance of the Library Services section of the Teaching & Learning Commons website. Supports skill development connected to information literacy, academic integrity, and/or copyright by developing content, delivering presentations or consulting with individuals. Provides support at the circulation desk and promotes services that are available. Has an area of functional specialization that may include website development, library instruction, copyright, or library systems.
Qualifications:
- Minimum requirement of a 2 year Library Technician Diploma
- Minimum of 3 years experience working as a library technician providing reference services to patrons, in an academic library with knowledge of research databases
- Experience with office software and equipment (e.g. scanners, photocopiers), web browsers, and automated library systems
- Experience with webpage software and basic HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) coding or current coding language
- Strong knowledge of research methodology, internet, and database searching
- Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and verbal/written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and show a high degree of initiative
