About the role

Why Redlen Technologies?

Redlen Technologies is a pioneering company that has revolutionized the semiconductor crystal growth and fabrication process.

At Redlen Technologies, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our founder's visionary work with the Canadian Space Agency laid the foundation for our groundbreaking Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) sensors, revolutionizing medical imaging, security imaging, and non-destructive testing. We are driving a quantum leap forward in medical CT scanners, elevating diagnostic accuracy while reducing radiation dose– a technological feat that has earned us global recognition. With a commitment to excellence, we have earned the trust of Fortune 500 industry customers, leading to our acquisition by Canon Inc. for $430M– a testament to our industry leadership.

With over 200 dedicated professionals, we take pride in fostering a work environment where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals thrive. As an equal opportunity employer we demonstrate that diversity drives innovation, and we are passionate about building a future where every employee contributes to our mission-driven success. Redlen's teams, mirroring the multifaceted diversity of Canadian society, exemplify our commitment to leveraging a wide range of ideas and backgrounds as a driving force for innovation, business excellence, and pioneering advancements in STEM.

The R&D Department ensures Redlen's technology and fabrication process supports design and manufacturing of the company's detector module products, verifies these products meeting their design specifications, and validates they are suitable for use in key customer applications.

Within R&D, the Verification and Validation (V&V) Team plays a key role in new product introduction to manufacturing by verifying that all design specifications are met, which involves measuring photon counting performance, and compiling data from the design teams. The team is also responsible for validating that product specifications and manufactured detector performance are suitable for the intended application, e.g., medical CT imaging. The V&V team's work spans all aspects of detector performance and photon-counting imaging systems.

As a Director of Research and Technology Development you will have full responsibility for the V&V team: drive the company-wide V&V strategy, represent the function in product and technology planning, oversee the scaling of test infrastructure, align budgets and objectives within the team, and provide leadership and development for team members.

You will contribute to the development of key technology capabilities—such as ASIC capabilities—within the V&V team, guided by the evolving needs of the business and technical priorities, with an emphasis on cross-functional alignment and effective knowledge transfer. Additionally, your role includes oversight of Redlen's IP strategy in alignment with technical leaders and executives.

You will also lead select cross-functional projects within R&D or across multiple departments, as business needs require. This includes overall oversight of cross-R&D budget planning and goal alignment.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Innovation

  • Define a strategic framework for determining which product requirements can be validated “by design” and which necessitate formal factory acceptance testing or sampling, ensuring this approach is scalable, risk-informed, and aligned with system-level quality objectives
  • Create and convey a clear, compelling shared vision and technical roadmap for the team that meets current and emerging business needs
  • Develop team objectives and key results (OKRs) to implement the technical roadmap; manage execution to meet the OKRs
  • Maintain a lightweight risk, action, and issue tracking system that supports fast parallel execution, identifies roadblocks early, includes mitigation plans, and enables rapid stakeholder communication through simple, high-cadence progress reporting
  • Research, specify, source and commission capital equipment required to meet the technical roadmap, in collaboration with other groups as appropriate
  • Contribute to the technology roadmap for Redlen detectors and application segments using advanced technical analysis and judgment, understanding of customer imaging applications and parameters (including set up of an imaging testbed where we can exercise Redlen products in realistic applications)
  • Ensure V&V is represented in design reviews conducted by external teams and/or with customers and ensure verification and testability is considered at all stages of design maturity
  • Outline a strategy for automated verification workflow and reporting to support increasing team output

Team Management:

  • Lead the team with clear priorities and plans. Coordinate with other groups to agree on scope, schedule, and budget. Remove barriers beyond the team’s control to keep projects on track and delivered as promised
  • Foster an inclusive environment that stimulates new thinking, creativity, and constructive debate
  • Assign individual objectives to all team members, and track progress during the year, using Dayforce
  • Define human resource needs for the team and work with Redlen’s HR team to support skill development and recruiting

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Maintain awareness of new product introduction (NPI) plans within Redlen’s module engineering department and align team goals to support project success
  • Work with Module Engineering department to support structured documentation of product requirements and specifications
  • Proactively share strategic updates to executive leadership, internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment. Report on problems that may affect company objectives

Best Practices:

  • Ensure the use of best practices in the team’s work including the use of design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, communication of scientific results, etc.
  • Ensure lessons learned reviews at the completion of each project
  • Ensure written documentation of routine activities using SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
  • Continuously implement initiatives that aim to improve processes, systems and culture across the department and wider company
