SCOPE
Reporting to the Manager, NouLa Black Student Centre, the incumbent provides direct assistance, guidance and advice to Black students to help them achieve their highest academic potential. They coordinate supports, as well as initiate contact with students and offer resources to help them thrive in a large urban university.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide support, guidance and advice to Black students requiring help in the resolution of issues that have the potential to affect retention and academic success. Advocate on students’ behalf in complex situations.
• Work in close collaboration with University partners, including faculty, academic advisors, the Equity Office, Financial Aid and Awards, and student services units to help students in personal or academic need access timely and appropriate sources of help.
• Support students with navigating the University, understanding academic language and rules in the calendar and other documents.
• Maintain statistics on student demographics and services requests and delivery to help create strategies that aim to improve service delivery.
• Track student progress and follow up when students have not returned to studies.
• Coordinate NouLa’s mentorship program. Including reviewing applications, planning and coordinating mentorship workshops, and facilitating mentor pairings for each mentee. Coordinate and collaborate with other mentorship programs offered across the University.
• Keep up to date on best practices and trends in Black student support and assess relevance to Concordia’s Black student population.
• Plan, organize and deliver workshops and events designed to build student capacity in writing and study skills, time management and classroom interaction, in collaboration with other student services units.
• Create and maintain a database of scholarships, awards and bursaries available to Black students and help students with their applications as required.
• Participate in major events across the University such as Orientation and Open House.
• Help plan and organize special activities for the Centre.
• Participate in University meetings related to Black student issues.
• Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree with two to four years of related work experience.
• Demonstrated experience working directly with Black people, communities, collectives and organizations.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Black student experiences and issues in post-secondary education.
• Resourceful team player dedicated to helping students succeed.
• Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and French.
• Good knowledge (Intermediate level) of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Experience leading discussion groups or facilitating meetings.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, work under pressure with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work autonomously and to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to work outside normal operating hours for special events.
• Knowledge of the university environment is an asset.
