CRISIS INTERVENTION WORKER

About the position:
McMan’s Family Intervention Program is seeking an experienced Crisis Intervention Worker to support children and youth during times of emotional, behavioural, and placement-related crises. If you have strong knowledge of child development, trauma, mental health, and complex behaviors and are passionate about supporting high-risk, hard-to-serve populations-this role is for you.
The successful candidate will provide children with immediate safety, stabilization, and emotional regulation in high-stress or transitional situations. Guided by the CARE (Children and Residential Experiences) model, this position centers on relationship-based, trauma-informed, and developmentally responsive support.
This is a front-line, community-based role supporting children and youth who may be newly apprehended, experiencing housing instability, managing mental health concerns, or without stable placement. You will work alongside a wide network of professionals in health, education, justice, child intervention, and community services to ensure wraparound care and support.
Hours: 40 hours per week, scheduled over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.), with participation in an on-call rotation to support emergent needs.
Location: Edmonton, Alberta and surrounding area
What you’ll do:
· Provide direct, CARE-aligned support to children and youth in immediate or ongoing crisis.
· Build safe, trusting relationships using play, structure, and relational consistency.
· Respond to high-risk behaviours (e.g., elopement, aggression, self-harm) using approved intervention and de-escalation techniques.
· Comfortable working alone in supporting children and youth in community settings (e.g., shelters, emergency placements, recreational outings).
· Promote emotional regulation and coping by modelling calm, predictable behaviour.
· Collaborate with Children’s Services case teams, caregivers, and mental health professionals.
· Assist in short-term planning and service stabilization, including contributing to observations and reports.
· Engage with diverse populations, including Indigenous children and families, with cultural humility and trauma sensitivity.
· Model inclusive and respectful behavior in all interactions with youth, families, and professionals
· Participate in on-call shifts and flexible scheduling to respond to urgent needs
· Document observations, incidents, and progress in line with agency and legislative requirements
What you bring:
· Completion of a Degree or Diploma in the Human Services field
· Six (6) months of directly related experience in youth and/or family work
· Equivalencies may be considered
· Police Information Check, including the Vulnerable Persons Sector Check (from within the last 6 months)
· Children Services Intervention Record Check (from within the last 6 months)
· Current Emergency First Aid-Level C CPR + AED
· A minimum of three years’ driving experience with a valid Class 5 driver’s license, current driver’s abstract, and comfort with driving to various locations are required. Having a reliable vehicle and auto insurance ($2 million) are assets.
· Strong counselling, mediation, crisis intervention, program planning, leadership and communication skills
· Strong assessment and intervention skills; ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
· Knowledge of family dynamics, addiction, domestic violence, mental health disorders and complex behaviours.
· Excellent knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
· Organizational skills and ability to prioritize
· Care Training
· Computer/Word processing skills.
