About the role

Job Description:

The Clinical Nurse Educator – Regional Critical Care leads and supports quality care outcomes through educational program planning, collaboration with members of the interprofessional team, implementation and evaluation processes to enhance knowledge, skills, and professionalism of clinical staff throughout the region including Collingwood General & Marine Hospital, Georgian Bay General Hospital, Stevenson Memorial Hospital, Headwaters Health Care Centre, and Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare. The mission, vision, and values of the Professional Practice Program are achieved through education, clinical practice, and research processes.

As the Clinical Nurse Educator for Regional Critical Care you will engage in:

Professional Development
Customer Development:

  • Act as a clinical decision-making guide in individual and group education.
  • Lead and facilitate clinical questioning, decision making, and critical thinking among staff.
  • Role model positive attitudes and RVH values.
  • Advocate that College Legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines are met, and report to management (in-program and within professional practice), individuals who are not in compliance
  • Facilitate staff professional development by offering educational opportunities that promote advancement in skills, knowledge and competency.
  • Encourage, promote, and facilitate continuous learning to constantly improve clinical practice.
  • Create an environment that enables professional development while incorporating a novice to expert approach.
  • Ensure the education required to maintain privacy and confidentiality is updated on all staff.

Personal Development:

  • Demonstrate responsibility and self-direction for own professional development through ongoing continuing education.
  • Support ongoing development of professional and educational skills through reflective practice.
  • Liaise with external professional organizations as necessary.
  • Promote a positive environment for learning and professional development.

Education:

  • Provide ongoing educational opportunities on clinical practice and skills for staff.
  • Provides regional educational support, collaboration and training opportunities when required or requested by regional partners
  • Acts as an education consultant for clinical staff.
  • Address unit/department specific education issues and provide educational needs assessment and analysis.
  • Incorporate adult learning principles in the planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs using multiple methodologies.
  • Research and prepare education materials using a variety of different media.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer to the practice setting.
  • Provide information and support to members of the interprofessional health care team.
  • Act as a mentor and facilitate staff involvement in unit presentations, research projects, etc.
  • Provide leadership in facilitating clinical practice changes at the unit and program level, as well as hospital wide initiatives, in collaboration with members of the interprofessional team.
  • Support the development, dissemination and sustainment of nursing specific and interprofessional standards of care, medical directives, policies and procedures, department protocols and pre-printed orders.
  • Liaise with community agencies regarding clinical practices.
  • Conduct annual learning needs assessment for the profession and development strategies for both profession specific and interprofessional learning.
  • Promote and facilitate professional development and ongoing learning and education both within and across professions.

  • Promote and participate in research activities and evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in and cultivate opportunities for clinically based research, professional presentations, and publications

Education:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Certificate Critical Care or related specialty required, with consideration given to those with Coronary Care I & II
  • Minimum of five years recent full time clinical practice experience with demonstrated clinical excellence in Acute Care Medicine and/or Critical Care required.
  • Telemetry experience an asset
  • Previous Clinical Nurse Educator experience is preferred.
  • Previous Professional Practice experience is preferred.

Competencies:

  • Current BCLS is required.
  • Current ACLS is required.
  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing is required.
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Certification required.

Other:

  • Registered Nurses of Ontario Membership (RNAO) required.
  • Adult education certificate or training preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change and to foster an environment which promotes professional development.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at one time.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve goals and objectives within a specified time frame.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Familiarity with pertinent legislation related to institutional health care and health care providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to energize, coach, mentor, encourage, and support.
  • Willing to travel throughout the region and occasionally provincially or out of the province; access to own transportation.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, located in Barrie, Ontario, provides safe, high-quality care for residents across a large geographical region including Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The area is home to more than 450,000 residents, with half of RVH’s patients living outside the City of Barrie.

As the largest health centre in North Simcoe Muskoka, RVH provides highly specialized services, and technology not found anywhere else in the region. This includes the only interventional radiology suites for minimally invasive surgeries, vascular services, advanced stroke care, as well as dedicated trauma rooms in its large Emergency department. RVH is also home to the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Program and the RVH Regional Renal Program meaning distance is no longer a factor for residents receiving lifesaving treatment.
