Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Technologist in the Applicable Section, the incumbent is responsible for the receiving and processing of laboratory specimens and other functions.

Experience

  • Experience in specimen handling essential.
  • Experience with automated specimen processing systems desired.
  • Laboratory Information System experience desired.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Completion of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program from an accredited institution or equivalent education and 2 years laboratory experience essential.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of:
    • Windows computer environment required.
    • Microsoft Office programs required.
    • Workplace Health and Safety Program or training preferred.
    • Privacy legislation such as the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) essential.
    • Health and safety practices in a laboratory setting essential.
    • Biology desired.
    • Medical and technical terms essential.
  • Attention to detail essential.
  • Ability to organize workload essential.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions essential.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment essential.
  • Ability to train new staff in various procedures in specimen receiving essential.
  • Computer literacy essential.
  • Ability to make simple mathematical calculations essential.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
  • Excellent cooperative skills are necessary to deal with staff and clients.

Physical Requirements

  • Working shifts, weekends, and holidays may be required.
  • Participating in standby and callback duty may be required. Exposure to all hazards and dangers if incumbent is working in a laboratory (For more definitive information, refer to the Job Hazard Analysis Assessment of this position within the specific laboratory).

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.
