Unit Summary
The Eating Disorders Service within the McMaster Children's hospital provides a comprehensive range of services for children, adolescents and their families through the delivery of Inpatient, Day Treatment and Outpatient Services. The focus of this service is on children and adolescents with a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and other related eating disorders.
Position Summary
The Day Treatment Social Worker will be responsible to provide in-depth psychosocial assessments, to include the identification of child, adolescent and family strengths, and assess dynamics, interactions, attitudes, feelings and cultural issues in relation to the child and adolescent with an eating disorder. As a member of the Day treatment team, the MSW will be responsible for supporting the child and family through the scheduled day treatment plan, and to develop coping strategies and providing comprehensive transition/discharge planning from the day treatment program. This will be achieved through a variety of modalities including individual therapy, family therapy, group work, consultation, case management, community outreach and advocacy. The Social Worker will identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources as required and will work closely with the HWDSB supports allocated to day treatment patients.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday; days (may require some evening work)
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work
- Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
- Minimum of 3 years clinical experience providing individual, family and group therapy to children and teens with eating disorders, within a family context
- Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in an inpatient, outpatient and day treatment pediatric eating disorder setting
- Minimum of 5 years recent and relevant experience in a pediatric mental health setting with expertise in providing individual, group and family therapy for children, adolescents and families
- Excellent knowledge and demonstrated use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Family Based Therapy (FBT) and Dialectical Based Therapy, EFFT, with an eating disorder population
- Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, and the Child and Family Services Act
- Demonstrated expertise in assessment, psychoeducation, crisis intervention and advocacy skills in working with children, teens and their families experiencing eating disorders
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and the ability to teach
- Proven ability to organize, prioritize and problem-solve effectively
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings
Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
