As a member of the payroll team, the payroll accountant position is primarily responsible for providing analytical support to the organization as part of the Finance team. This support includes compiling and remitting government and union filings, preparing financial data analysis, and testing of changes in accordance with Company, union and statutory requirements. This position requires an individual with strong attention to detail, an analytical mindset, who can operate well in a fast-paced environment.

This position is based in our Edmonton or Winnipeg office.

What You Will Be Working On

  • Process remittances related to payroll including disbursements to unions, employer associations, benefits, tax authorities and worker's compensation ensuring compliance with legislation in multiple provinces.
  • Preparing detailed reports of payroll information to internal stakeholders.
  • Interpret collective agreements, work with management and unions to ensure compliance and deal with any issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate with the Digital Services team to test and implement payroll system calculations, reports, automation, and enhancements.
  • Leverage and utilize technology to help build efficiencies in payroll processes and reporting of remittances and financial data.
  • Reconcile GL accounts.
  • Actively liaise with staff and management on payroll related inquiries.
  • Perform payroll administrative tasks as required.
  • Share knowledge and experiences with other team members
  • Work independently, research complex payroll issues and make recommendations for continuous improvements
  • Maintain and safeguard confidential employee information.

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 4 years in a finance and/or payroll experience related capacity with demonstrated experience analyzing processes and complex data
  • Payroll experience as well as working with a large ERP/HRIS system is a definite asset
  • Background with large multi-union workforce across the country, ability to interpret collective agreements, union remittances and reporting requirements.
  • Efficient with creating financial models, spreadsheet analysis and respectful dealing with confidential information.
  • Excellent communications skills, customer service orientation and a team player.
  • Comfortable managing high volumes and consistently meeting tight deadlines while ensuring high attention to detail and accuracy.
