The City is making a transformational cultural shift on how we approach Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). As a Safety Training Specialist within the Occupational Health and Safety Business Unit, your character, and commitment to building strong and trusted relationships with partners will be critical during this cultural shift. The Safety Training Specialist role requires exceptional communication and customer service skills, training design knowledge, occupational health and safety knowledge, time-management practices, and multi-tasking skills. Reporting to the Leader, Business Excellence, you will work closely with the Occupational Health and Safety team to design training materials and courses. You will also collaborate with Corporate Learning and Employee Development teams, subject matter experts, partners, and project sponsors to build quality safety training programs, courses, and materials. Primary duties include:

  • Assess safety training, learning, and development needs for Occupational Health and Safety and the Corporation.
  • Using best practices in instructional methodology and adult learning, design, develop and create instructional materials, such as course training standards, lesson plans, resources, instructor guides, and student manuals.
  • Research and analyze new applicable solutions and technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of training, and identify and address gaps.
  • Oversee safety training programs and courses to align and support the Corporation in meeting Provincial legislation and Corporate OHS policies.
  • Develop training materials, presentations and resources to support learning objectives and outcomes.
  • Support training administration through maintenance of training records, training registration, and monitoring of training completion.
  • Conduct needs assessments and skills gap analyses to identify training priorities and opportunities in the firm.
  • Coordinate curriculum facilitation and delivery with external service providers (e.g., AMHSA, CEMA).
  • Utilize evaluation tools to measure the effectiveness of learning and training solutions.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Commerce, Education, Adult Education, or a related Training field with at least 5 years of experience in learning curriculum development and instructional design.
  • Experience with curriculum design, learning theory, research, extraction of technical content, and technical writing is required.
  • Knowledge of SumTotal, Learning Management System (LMS) administration, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Articulate Storyline will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Learning Management Systems, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Content Server will be considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires consulting, research and problem-solving skills, and effective communication skills with a focus on relationship building to help coach and develop staff.
  • Strong communication skills are needed for conflict resolution and to create an environment conducive to learning.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $42.62 - 56.97 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
