The Student Academic Learning Team (SALT) offers various resources and services for students in an effort to reduce barriers to learning. The Academic Learning Strategist, reporting to the SALT Manager, works as part of an integrated team to provide individual learning strategies to MaKami students who are experiencing learning barriers. The successful candidate in this permanent full-time position is passionate, determined, proactive and relentlessly optimistic in helping the students succeed academically.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver targeted learning strategies tailored to students’ individual needs and course requirements.
  • Collaborate with instructors, Student Services, and academic learning staff to ensure effective implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of student learning plans.
  • Conduct initial screenings to assess student suitability for short-term academic or wellness counselling and refer to appropriate internal or external resources as needed.
  • Provide academic advising and learning skills programming aligned with the diverse needs of adult learners.
  • Work in partnership with the HCA department to support students throughout their academic journey, offering both academic and personal development guidance.
  • Teach essential academic skills such as note-taking, organization, reading comprehension, time management, and memory enhancement techniques.
  • Coach students in developing life skills, including goal setting, personal organization, time management, and basic financial literacy, to support their academic and personal success.
  • Promote student well-being by teaching stress management, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and motivational strategies.
  • Design and implement individualized learning plans for course final retakes and preparation for provincial examinations.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a related post-secondary diploma; a degree in Education, Psychology, Adult Education, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least two years of experience working with adult learners, ideally in a post-secondary or adult education setting.
  • Previous experience as a learning strategist in a student-centered environment is considered a strong asset.
  • Background in healthcare education or relevant industry experience is an asset.

  • Deep understanding of the academic and personal challenges faced by adult learners.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based strategies and interventions that enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to identify learning barriers and implement effective solutions.
  • High attention to detail when tracking academic progress and supporting goal achievement.
  • Flexible and adaptable in responding to evolving priorities and student needs in a dynamic learning environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities and maintain an efficient workflow.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster a supportive, respectful, and productive learning environment through clear and empathetic interaction.
