Position Summary

The Tory Trauma Program and Neurosurgical Department at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are seeking a certified Physician Assistant (PA) to join our inter-professional team. The PA will play a critical role in supporting the assessment, management, and continuity of care for neurosurgical patients. Working under medical directives and in collaboration with supervising physicians, the PA will contribute to both outpatient and inpatient care environments, including support for neuro-oncology, neurovascular, spine, functional disorders, and neuro-trauma subspecialties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in both inpatient and ambulatory settings, including participation in specialized clinics

  • Collaborates with Neurosurgery and the inter-professional team to support timely and seamless assessment and care planning

  • Conduct comprehensive patient histories and physical exams with a neurological focus

  • Participate in daily rounds, perform clinical assessments, document findings, review imaging and laboratory results

  • Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigation results, availability of services, and patient needs

  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests within scope and under supervision

  • Collaborate with the inter-professional neurosurgical team (allied health, nurse practitioner, nursing, neurosurgery residents, fellows and attendings) and liaise with consulting services to facilitate care transitions across the continuum

  • Optimize discharge planning in an inter-professional setting

  • Assist in referral and coordination of community and specialty services during care transitions

  • Collaborate with the team on quality and patient safety initiatives

  • Engage in quality improvement, research, and academic initiatives within the program

  • Support health promotion and disease prevention strategies

  • Monitor and report on Key Performance Indicators and clinical outcomes

Qualifications & Skills

  • Current Registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Certified or awaiting test results through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a related setting (ex. Outpatient neurosurgery, inpatient neurosurgery, trauma, neurology) is preferred
  • Current ACLS certification required; ATLS preferred
  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills in complex environments
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within inter-professional teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and quality improvement
