Are you passionate about justice and supporting survivors? Join us in building a more accessible, compassionate justice system for newcomer survivors of gender-based violence.

The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region (SASC) is hiring a Newcomer Gender-Based Violence Legal Advocate. This is a full-time, in-person role that involves travel throughout the Waterloo Region. The successful candidate will walk alongside newcomer survivors, supporting them through legal systems and advocating for their rights with care, dignity, and cultural humility.

We encourage newcomers to Canada to apply, particularly those with lived or professional experience related to migration, legal advocacy, gender-based violence, or trauma-informed care.

About the Role
As the Newcomer Legal Advocate, you will provide direct legal advocacy and system navigation for survivors of gender-based violence who are newcomers, immigrants, or refugees. You will support approximately 100 survivors per year with:

  • Legal information and navigation in family law, immigration law, and criminal proceedings
  • Trauma-informed accompaniment to court, legal appointments, or police services
  • Referrals and collaboration with lawyers, community legal clinics, and service providers
  • Legal education workshops for newcomer communities and groups
  • Co-facilitate an 8-week in-person support group for Black and racialized survivors on Thursday evenings 4 times per year.
  • Reducing barriers to access by coordinating interpretation, transportation, and culturally relevant support
  • Office hours at our various locations: SASC Main Office, SASC Cambridge Office, Waterloo Region Waterloo Region Courthouse office and at the Family Violence Project office located at 400 Queen S400 Queen St. S. Kitchener, as well regular accompaniments to appointments throughout Waterloo Region
  • You will work as part of a small, passionate team of legal advocates, anti-human trafficking and sexual violence counsellors.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You:

  • Are a newcomer or immigrant with personal or professional experience navigating Canadian legal or support systems
  • Have worked with survivors of violence, trauma, or systemic injustice
  • Are committed to intersectional feminism, anti-racism, and upholding the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
  • Communicate with empathy and clarity, especially across languages or cultures
  • Have a solid understanding of Canada’s legal systems (or are eager to learn with our support)

Qualifications and Assets

We recognize that formal education is not the only path to expertise. We welcome applicants with a combination of lived experience, professional skills, and/or education, such as:

  • Experience in legal advocacy, settlement services, social work, community support, or gender-based violence response
  • Strong knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) the legal rights of survivors, especially within immigration, family, and criminal law
  • Comfort facilitating group workshops and working with culturally diverse communities
  • Proficiency in languages beyond English is a strong asset
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle preferred (travel required within the region)

What We Offer:

  • Starting Salary: $51,870 ($28.50/hour, 35-hour work week)
  • Health benefits are 100% employer-paid health/dental/vision coverage for staff and families
  • New hires enjoy 4 weeks of vacation, time off between December 25th and January 1st inclusive and a generous bank of Personal Time Off
  • RRSP Matching after 1 year of employment
  • Individualized professional development, regular training, mentorship, and learning opportunities
  • Commitment to enhancing equity through mandatory Anti-Racism training, an active Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive staff-led committee and ensuring that the voices of staff and survivors from equity-deserving groups are prioritized and centered within the work
  • A supportive, feminist workplace deeply rooted in the social justice movement, community and equity

Accessibility & Equity

We recognize that sexual violence disproportionately affects women, trans, and non-binary individuals. Further, we recognize that our work is conducted on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishnaabe and Chonnonton Peoples, specifically on the Haldimand Tract, which was granted to the Six Nations along the Grand River. This acknowledgment is crucial due to sexual violence, including human trafficking being rooted in oppressive systems such as sexism, racism and colonialism specially on Black, Indigenous, and racialized women, girls, and gender-diverse survivors.

We will provide accommodation at any stage of the hiring process on request. To discuss your needs confidentially, please contact us at jobs@sascwr.org or (226) 786-4022.
