About the role:
The Commercial Lines Underwriter plays a critical role in assessing risks, evaluating insurance applications, and making informed underwriting decisions on new business, renewals and endorsement submissions. They will ensure the profitability of the company's portfolio by balancing risk selection by providing competitive insurance solutions. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build strong relationships with our broker partners.
We are looking for someone with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong time management and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and maintain a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
What you’ll be doing:
- Review and analyze commercial insurance applications across designated market segments (restaurants, habitational, etc.) and manage policy submissions, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and company objectives
- Assess risks associated with each application by considering factors like loss history, risk details, industry trends, and risk mitigation protocols.
- Apply underwriting guidelines and risk selection criteria to determine submission eligibility and insurability.
- Utilize third-party resources (as needed) to gather relevant information and conduct thorough due diligence.
- Determine terms and conditions of coverage, including premiums, deductibles and exclusions, while ensuring competitiveness.
- Communicate effectively with our broker partners to explain underwriting decisions and answer questions.
- Prepare clear and concise underwriting documentation to explain the rationale behind each decision.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all underwriting activities within the agency management system.
- Stay informed about industry trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes including participation in ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies while maintaining a high level of professionalism in all underwriting practices.
- Other duties as required.
What we need you to bring:
- Minimum College or University level Degree/Undergraduates Degree or comparable experience.
- Minimum 3 - 5 years of work experience in a commercial lines department at an Insurance Brokerage, Managing General Agency and/or Insurance company in a similar role and/or with similar duties and responsibilities.
- R.I.B.O (Level I) License (Preferred) or subject to completion within the first year of employment.
- Proficient with MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- CIP and/or CAIB designations considered an asset.
